I guess it's not truly slavery because modders are not forced to work full time against their will in order to create their mods. However, just like slaves, most video game modders are not rewarded for their time and hard work which is wrong on so many levels. I don't know what motivates modders to invest so much time into their mods if they're not rewarded for it in some way or another. I would do it for myself, but not for others if I'm not rewarded for it. Imagine having a full time job with a yearly salary of $0. Meanwhile employed game developers like me earn thousands of dollars each month.
I'm an electronic engineer, a web designer, a graphic designer and a computer programmer.. but I would never create or remaster video games for free. I wouldn't do it for less than $24000 a year. It's important to value yourself, your time and your hard work no matter what you do for a living.
