If he has more then one partition, and the "restore" option is not set on all partition it will only create "restore image" for the partition on which the Windows is installed, so that will work only if his files ware on the same partition as Windows!?

unfortunately restore option works only with system and programs, not with data.. you should find some program for recovery file, windows don't have tools for doing this operation
