Fifa 2007 - video drivers issue with new monitor

All, here's my issue after a long time with none... I changed to a new, bigger screen and of course as soon as I loaded new graphics drivers (for NVIDIA GeFroce 7800 GS) my Fifa 2007 started having issues again. The game loads fine, but when a match is starting either it's choppy or the whole game crashes.

I remember when I got Fifa 2006 I could not run it with the newest drivers. So I found an older driver and it worked great. Now, although I know I had nv4_disp (6.14.10.8198) that used to work, even after the downgrade I still have the problem. Any ideas?
Thanks.

And one more thing - somehow now the game started, but the ball was invisible, just the shadow showed... Strange.

I don't think I understand the cause and effect here. Why would changing your monitor result in needing a new graphics card driver??

Did you clean out the newly installed driver properly before trying to install the driver you were using before?? There are instructions in the nVidia documentation on how to remove all traces of the old driver before installing a new one (where new and old are relative to your system not the drivers themselves)

I really appreciate you taking the time to describe what I can try - thank you.

Here's where I am at now.
I got the Drive Cleaner. I followed your steps, uninstalled them, removed the NVIDUA folder, run the Cleaner a few times, rebooted, in the order above. Then I ran the driver for 81.98 again. What I have noticed the screen and all other games that I test (Stalker, SupCommander) run fine, but Fifa2007 starts, but then usually hangs during team or player selections (in one case I got through and played one game, only to have it all freeze again during player selection before the other game.

Then I got desperate. I went to NVIDIA site and search for anything they suggest for my card - and it turned out to be NVIDIA Detonator 63.75, as a download called 163.75_forceware_winxo_32bit...

Same result, screen looks great (res 1680x1050), games play fine, but Fifa07 gets stuck again during player selections...

Now let me mention what I should have started with to begin with - this is how my trouble started:

I've had Fifa07 running on NVIDIA 7800 GS with NVIDIA 81.98 Detonator driver on my old 19' monitor. In the past I could not run it on the most recent driver, but one I found 81.98 Fifa07 (and Fifa06), and other games, ran great.

So my specs were:

AMD Athlon XP-A, 1833 MHz
Asus A7N8X-E Delux
2GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GS (256 MB)
XP SP2

w/ 19' monitor

Now, I bought 22' Samsung SyncMaster 220wm.
And, (here comes trouble...) I replaced my current video card with NVIDIA 7300 (512MB). Since I put in this 7300 card, I loaded its drivers. Well, by the time I realized I made a mistake I put my original card in, reloaded 81.98 drives, and then installed the new monitor.

Things looked good again, better yet with the big new screen - until something made me try Fifa07 and then the misery began...

So now, I am not giving up on the new monitor, but I've reinstalled the driver (91.82, as well as the one from NVIDIA), and then tried all those games and only Fifa causes me trouble,
Now I have my resolution set to 1690x1050, which I like, and all games play, but Fifa.

Hopefully I provided enough background.

Thank you,

What resolution are you running FIFA at?? Did you have to edit .INI file entries to get it to play at that res?? Have you tried the latest nVidia driver?? (FWIW I run FIFA 07 and FIFA 08 quite happily with the 162.18 driver)

My screen is set to 1680x1050, with Fifa07 maxed at 1280x1024x32

I just noticed that after my last crash (10min ago) when I just tried to start the game again I got an error:

"Fifa07 requires hardware graphics acceleration"

I've seen that before, will have to reboot to start again. I'm beginning to think I need to pull out my old monitor again...

Hi,

Do you have DirectX 9 installed? There is a folder on the Fifa Install disk that has the directx install files. Try running those. Also, you are plugging your monitor cable into your Graphics Card...right ;)

One last thing, I never figured out if your Motherboard has an AGP slot. Does it? Does your motherboard have on-board graphics? Did you unistall those drivers? - you should

I wouldn't give up on the monitor just yet:)

Best of luck

Does it make any difference if you try lower resolutions (start from the lowest offered, and work up) and colour depths??

I've seen that with FIFA 06 too. It seems to happen when the game crashes and leaves the video card and/or drivers in such a state that the OS can't begin to work out what is going on.

I doubt it (and I'd be prepared to bet that if you do you still get the same problems).

BTW did your new monitor come with a .INF file?? Does Windows recognise the monitor??

I got it, at last.

Knowing I had 81.98 detonator drivers before, I was running in circles and could not believe what else could be wrong. And as suggested above, after reconnecting my old monitor my problem continued.

So... I took a few days of break - and though what the heck I might be missing. Well, often it's the easy and obvious we overlook... so I check my Device Manager and I see 2 exclamation marks. One of them had to do with a bad driver/chipset for motherboard. I went to the nvidia site and downloaded the whole packege that might match my mother board - after that both exlamation marks went away.

And then, no more issues with Fifa07!

Thank you all for you help, I sure learned a lot!
