FIFA announce schedule & qualifying spots for SA 2010

Fifa sets 2010 World Cup schedule

Fifa has announced that the 2010 World Cup in South Africa will take place between 11 June and 11 July.

World football's Executive Committee has also decided to keep the qualifying format from the last World Cup so the host's place is guaranteed.

"We didn't change anything," said Fifa president Sepp Blatter.

Blatter reiterated that Fifa had faith in South Africa, but added: "...we have said that they should bring a little bit of fire to the preparations."

The decision to keep the same number of qualifying places will see five African teams plus South Africa secure a place in the tournament.

In addition, there will be places for 13 European countries, five Asian and Oceania teams, and a total of eight for South America and the Central American region.

The bidding process for the 2014 World Cup was also officially opened after the two-day meeting.

This will be held in South America, with Brazil as favourites, after a decision in May 2002 to rotate the competition on a continent basis.

But Blatter added: "We have said that the 2014 World Cup will be staged in South America, but if there is no candidate strong enough then we would go north instead as the logical thing.

"We took the decision to ask South America's 10 associations if they wanted to organise the World Cup and now nine of them have come out in favour of Brazil.

"But Brazil would still have to undergo the same scrutiny as previous bids.

"The bar has been set very high after the last World Cup (in Germany) and if the only candidate from South America were not to fulfil the requirements then we would go beyond South America."

Basically it says that CSF will keep the 4.5 spots for the world cup, the play-off instead of being against a OFC team they will play against a CONCACAF team, the OFC team would play against an AFC team. It seems that after all CSF will keep the same system for the eliminatories a 2 legs league between the 10 teams, it was rumoured that they would change into a 2 rounds system, on the first round the teams would be divided in 2 groups of 5 then the 3 best teams of each group would qualify to a final round where all the 6 teams remaining would play against each other, and that last round would be played in a single country, apparently this would've helped with the leagues schedule, but after all they are keeping the same old system.

I just hope Togo doesn't get to the world cup, after 2006 they really don't deserve to be in another world cup for 100 years

Togo deserved to qualify for WC 2006 and can be a very strong side under Stephen Keshi but they lost him during the African nations cup. They lost Keshi because of Adebayor and the football associations stupidity for choosing a **** player over arguably one of the best African coaches in recent history. :nape:

Sepp, we all know the South American nations are unsafe and the stadiums are ****. Might as well stage it in the Good Ol' USA and just announce it now! :)

Im talking about the fact that they almost abondened their matches in the world cup because they wanted larger match fees. Who do they think they are, isn't representing your country on the worlds greatest stage more then enough to play

By north America he obviously means Canada dude. (hes mentioned it when he came to oversee the YWC preparations)
(USA= 1 World cup only 12 years ago)
Mexico = 2

Canada= Youth World Cup coming <which was said to be a strong indicator to see if Canada can hold it> + already has anough stadiums to satisfy the WC and can build much more.

_______
Still Im 100% for Brazil. Seeing Argentina vs.???? and having 90,000 Argentinians pack the stadium ...............or seeing Uruguay vs. ???? and having 90,000 also pack the stadium ...........would be incredible.
(Also this world cup SCREAMS : "1950 sequel" and all eyes will be on Uruguay and Brazil <<<Already heard of Brazilians friends claiming that in Brazil people are talking of filling the stadium for whoever Uruguay plays and cheering against us to make sure we dont make it to another final (((If we were to play Brazil in a quarter final ......or any game .........it would be one of the most legendary rematches in history of football.

:D CANT WAIT!!!! (we have to qualify first though :( :funny: )

Not all of southamerica is Colombia or São Paulo, and the rest probably aren't as unsafe as South Africa. And if southamerican stadiums are **** what rests of ye oldé U.S.A.?:boohoo:

Plus if you asked me i wouldn't want a World Cup to be hosted in Argentina. Maybe a Copa América, but not a World Cup.

im so sick of hearing people say that south africa is a dangerous country, ive lived here my whole life and havn't been robbed once, most transport is safe, its just a case of people being scared, if one of the criminals here sees somebody with fear accross their face, especially if it looks like a tourist and you are in a township area, no doubt about you're gonna be targeted, otherwise it is very unlikely that anything is going to happen to you, If you guys have any questions about south africa just ask

Not falling apart like Independente's? You had to host a match at Racing because yours BROKE, your stadium BROKE! How the hell does that happen?

Actually we HOSTED the match against Racing. And anyway after the sunday the remodeling will star and by 2008...

:o

And by the way if they made a world cup or a copa américa in Argentina doesn't mean they have to use Independiente's stadium anyway. And mostly Boca would start to bitch that their stadium isn't being used(i'll agree with you if you say that stadium is a ****hole).

depends where you live bro, Johannesburg is a dangerous city i got friends living there they tell me it's pretty screwed up and he has been robbed twice. but other parts of South Africa like Cape Town are beautiful. but this is no reason not to host the WC there.
