FIFA Rankings - New format

The much-ridiculed FIFA world rankings are to be revised and the new system unveiled on July 6, FIFA head Sepp Blatter announced on Friday.

Germany in particular have complained that them being 19th in the rankings while Mexico are fourth and the United States fifth is unfair and that they have been penalized for playing friendly matches for the past two years.

"The rankings system is to be modified," said Blatter. "It will only take into account the results from the last four years and not eight.

"The new format will be unveiled on July 6," added the Swiss, who highlighted the case of fifth-ranked the United States as a case in point declaring that they had been hugely disappointing.

There could be more changes than just the reduction of the timespan it covers, quite likely or there wouldn't have to be another release after that brief statement.

The most important change to the calculation of the ranking is that it will no longer take into account the last eight years of results but only the last four. At the same time, all of the other factors previously taken into account (result, importance of match, strength of opponents, regional strength, number of matches considered) were tested, analysed and, in some cases, totally revised. In fact, two of the factors that were previously used (goals scored and home advantage) will no longer have any impact on the ranking.

you just can't rank a team which changes players/coaches every year. only rankable sports are individual sports like tennis and golf.

The rankings should start new every single year kinda like the ATP Tour has the 52 week rankings for the men tennis players. That makes sense. What does a performance from a let's say Italian team now has to do with the Italian team from 4 years ago :|?

All the other rankings in sports are re-started every season/year.
