Fifa to force an 18-club limit in top euro leagues

There are pros and cons to this....

On the one hand more international games! Which is good!

On the other hand it if it forces everyone to comply then all the smaller countries like Greece that lack funds and fans would suffer. The larger countries that have the funds and fans would suffer.

catch 22

Well that's going to effectively domino throughout the leagues - if 2 are cut from the Premiership then 2 will also have to drop out from each of the lower divisions too - I can't see the Championship with 26 teams.

Septic Bladder talks absolute rubbish half the time - he has no clue what he's doing. :nape:

'We will do it. I think the clubs will be happy and it will give four more days to the international calendar in those countries where they have 20 clubs.'
What's the point then, if many of the players will still be playing the same number of matches? Take away 4 games, but replace them with 4 international games? Why? I thought this was about schedule congestion. Apparently it's about FIFA getting more money...

Leagues should be free to run themselves in the most economically feasible way they choose, and 20 is the optimal number in some countries, so be it.

Fifa to force an 18-club limit in top euro leagues

FIFA demands top Euro leagues to be cut to 18 clubs

MUNICH, June 8 (Reuters) - FIFA President Sepp Blatter said on Thursday all of Europe's top professional leagues should be cut to 18 clubs next year, but his plan provoked immediate opposition.

Blatter said he wanted the reduction to be in place for the 2007-08 season after the 56th FIFA Congress endorsed a package of Task Force 'For the Good of the Game' proposals.

But he met opposition from the English Premier League whose spokesman Shifty Johnson said there was no way that this would happen.

'The only people who are going to tell us how to run the Premier League are the league's 20 member clubs' chairmen.

'They are the only ones who can change the composition of the league and they are just not going to go for this - no way.'

'There is no appetite for this kind of change in the make-up of our league,' he said.

Blatter's plans are expected to meet equally robust opposition in France, Spain and Italy where they also, like England, operate a 20-club top league.

If they refuse to comply, FIFA could choose to use sanctions at their disposal including a warning, a fine or suspension from the World Cup for the relevant national association.

But a World Cup shorn of the stars from teams like Italy, Spain, France and England would be almost unthinkable.

Speaking after the Congress had supported the proposal, Blatter confirmed that he expected his executive committee to carry the plan through in one year.

'Yes, now we have the power to do this after the support today from Congress,' he said. 'We have been given the power now to work on it.

'We will do it. I think the clubs will be happy and it will give four more days to the international calendar in those countries where they have 20 clubs.'

Uefa can force leagues to comply by cutting the number of champions league and uefa spots that come from a league. Less football, I am opposed.

Excellent idea (Y) Will improve the quality, looking to last year, a lot of leagues had 1 or 2 obviously worst teams. (RBC, Sunderland, Treviso, Duisburg, Im sure Im forgetting some)

Not sure about this, but what would I know being a supporter of a club in a 12 team league?

I could see why. Some seasons look absolutely gruelling with the Christmas/New Year schedule in England looking very straining and incredible demands are placed on players all year round. I'm sure if players had a good rest before this year's World Cup then I'd imagine their performance will be different. Whether it's better for the rest or more rusty for the brief period off, well that's up for debate.

Looking at the amount of injuries around coming up to this World Cup, fewer games can only be a good thing.

well, portugal's gonna have a 16-league top division next year, and personally i think it's quite good, as it narrows down the amount of games played each season, and at the same time gives second leagues much more competition..

It wouldn't mean fewer games - it's just gonna mean more commercial International friendlies :nape:

As I said before, this means that the Premiership will lose two teams - meaning the already jammed schedule of the Coca Cola Championship (24 teams playing each other twice plus playoffs) is going to have to accomodate two extra teams (unless as I said before that they're gonna shunt two teams down from each respective league until they even out eventually) which is IMO totally unworkable.

It's a stupid idea. With less than honest motives driving it.

i would think that 2 extra teams would be relegated from each league. Short term its a complete bummer but long term would work.

It may not necessarily mean less matches, but less competitive matches. International friendlies have never had any importance and never will do and players never play anywhere near full 100% in those matches like they would be required to in a competitive league match, they're more like semi-competitive training sessions. And they are actually vital for the international teams to be able to actually bond and work together. I'm all for more international friendlies (Y)

MikeyM's right, they're just doing this so they push in some more stupid friendlies. I mean, look at what happened to Cisse in a friendly  Why is Blatter still employed? :nape: Don't get me started on that rubbish called the Confederations Cup, a useless touney if there ever was one/

It's a rubbish idea. 4 games cut is worth 12 points at most. Those 12 points can make a difference to many teams in the league.
