Well, my friend owns FIFA 2003 (PS2), & we play in the weekend everytime. IMO, the game is allright, better than last version, still need to be re-done in some aspects in the game.

FIFA 2003 still sucks, I can't even manage to score from corner kicks, not even ONCE after 1 month !! :(

After finally getting hold of PES2 and FIFA 2003 demos (cheers OPS2M UK), I have decided to give an unbiased (or something similar) review on the two.

Here ya gan.

Graphics
Both of them seem to have strong graphic engines. FIFA goes for the full-on razz-ma-tazz that only Canadians with a huge budget, can pull off. Stadiums (Stadio Del Alpi, in this case) seem well recreated and the pitch seems vast. The faces of the players are, actually, well recreated. Official kits are thrown in due to the licence and it doesn't look too bad. The goalposts are a bit abnormal but I'll overlook that one. Player models are a bit errmmm..... deformed too.

Now on to PES2. The pitch looks smaller than previous versions but it shows some realistic grass. Stadiums are accurate (San Siro and The Yokohama Stadium) complete with flare's and confetti. It's the little things that seem to pull me to PES2 though. The chunks of grass that get thrown up by the players boots and the slight blurring of the speeding ball all add to a nice experience. Players still run through the advertising boards though. It's a small gripe.

Sound and Presentation
Motty and Ally provide FIFA's commentary. Quite nice as you'd expect from EA and the Beeb. Expect the usual wit and seriousness that Motty always provides. On to the presentation. It looks rather nice. Team Logos appear in their respective half before kick off. Celebrations are typically well done and the stats occasionally pop up to give you something to look at during a goal kick. It's the default camera that spoils the game,in my opinion. It's so far out that you can't see a thing! It's only a demo but they could've changed it for you. It's another small gripe but it can cost you matches. Expect the standard line-upss and formations before play.

PES2 has a decent (on paper) pairing for the commentary. Peter Brackley and Trevor Brooking seem to be repeating PES1's lines. The commentary is still a bit dull. That is until Brackley seems to lose it in every match.

"Stop that man! C'mon!!"

It's something very encouraging for a gamer. Commentary seems very improved but it's still way off FIFA. Brooking makes th occasional grunt too. It's a comical experience and it doesn't bother me one bit. I quite enjoy the madness of it. On to the Presentation. Standard Line-ups and formations appear before the game and the goal replays are well improved. Its a great addition to see the in-goal camera appear. Getting one right in the corner is a rewarding experience. Celebrations are improved too. Robbie Keanes gun celebration and the Senegal dance make a nice appearance. There's still no place for Shearer's salute though:( Highlights are still lovely as ever but the club music should be left out. I havent seen the FIFA intro but PES2 has Queen and some nice CG to keep you watching.

Gameplay
Now on to important matters. FIFA's gameplay is very improved and the AI does seem persistent. It's nice but the players still feel like they are slipping around in grease! That aside, you can still play some decent football. I'm finding it hard to do so.

PES2 has an improved pace than PES. The game seems slicker and smoother. PES2 takes advantage of anologue controls to help you with your pace and shooting. Shooting soes seem harder to pull off and, overall, the game does seem harder due to the pace of the game. The AI is still top notch and you can really be punnished in games. In fact, they consistently do! They close you down and restrict you from getting forward. This forces you to opt for a slower build up and makes each game a rewarding experience. Passes are intercepted and even dodgy refs add to the realism. You can't just launch into players anymore as the foul system seems harsher than before. It's lovely, really.

Lasting Appeal
With the ammount of leagues it has, FIFA might keep you going for a while but the gameplay just bores me slightly.

After seeing PES2 and playing it. It should keep any football fan going for months on end. The Master League, Training Modes and Cups all should add to a rewarding experience.

Verdict
Overall, I would (and I will) buy PES2. It's more realistic and rewarding than EA's latest outing. No official licence can make a game better than PES2. It's gameplay just shines through. It's addictive and reminds me of the golden age of SWOS.

That's my two cents anyway.

There is no competition, PES2 kicks FIFA's A**.

PES2 is the ultimate football game. FIFA is good (It has all the licensing, competitions, more teams etc) but the one thing that FIFA lacks is the most important of all, the gameplay.

FIFA's gameplay sucks, its not challenging, all the shots and passes etc are automatic, whereas on PES2 you have to use direction for passes and power and height for shots.

FIFA can take their licenses and stick it where the sun don't shine, coz gameplay is about 95% of a football game, and FIFA's is so bad its untrue.

EA try to make their FIFA games as real as possible, with real names, sponsors on shirts, stadiums, competitions. KONAMI make their PES2 games FUN and at the end of the day thats what matters, whether they are fun and enjoyable to play.

And the Master League Rules!!!

I also couldn´t play Fifa 2003 anymore after 2 or 3 days.. I even think it was 3 days because it took more than 1 GIGA of my HD away, so I tried a little more, I thought it could be nicer than what I was thinking, being so big.. but guess what was the final conclusion after the 3rd day... :p

Cheers

FIFA 2003 lasted 1 week in my PS2, and that was because I had played WE6 for 6 months. I needed a change and played FIFA for a week...but after that it was back to WE6
FIFA is all bells and whistles...but their gameplay is still seriously flawed and nowhere near WE6 JL or WE6FE.

...and my FIFA CD is collecting dust.....especially now that I have WE6 FE....which is truly awesome with the Rhapsody patch...
(waiting for WE6 International, so that I can trade in my FIFA03)

Hmm. It seems that you confuse the notion and make the assumption of something being popular hence it is always better. That is not a wise assumption to make. What don't WE fans get? Have you played a WE game?

since i live in america, i haven't had the chance to play a konami football title since ISS '98. the only reasons i went back to the FIFA series were; 1) no updates to the ISS available here, and, 2) the depth of EA's licensing and game modes.

but after suffering through several of EA's mediocre upgrades ('01 was okay, '02 a huge disappointment, and don't me started on WC '02) i was really looking forward to the release of FIFA '03. several weeks and at least three different gameplay patches along, i find 2003 to be a huge letdown.

first of all, they've managed to leach most of the fun out of it. the game is challenging, sure, but mostly it's frustrating. the gameplay patches -- kobra's in particular -- have made the game bearable but the game's limitations are more and more glaring as time goes on. at least twice i've boxed it up and vowed not to touch it again. but i'm a sucker for playing through a league campaign, especially bringing a mid-table side up through the ranks, qualifying for better competitions, etc.

however, i'm purchasing a ps2 in anticipation of WE6's U.S. release. from everything i've read i won't be disappointed. if the game lives up to the hype, i doubt i'll buy an EA soccer title again.

I know how you feel. Most of us PES fans used to be FIFA fans. I haven't bought a FIFA since Fifa99. The shortcomings used to drive meinsane. I wen't through a whole season and wasn't able to score with a midfielder. Plus the lack of detail on jerseys made me play ISSPRO 98(Croatia jersey in particular, I was on a WC 98 high :) )

Never went back to EA. I try FIFA every year to have a good laugh, but they did surprise and improve on the hideous WC2002, but not nearly as good as any ISS game over the last 5 years :)

I like Fifa. I just think games like ISS have much more realistic gameplay. Fifa is just a very good looking game, with stunning grafics. But nothing more than that

ha! i know exactly what you mean. when fifa '02 came out i scored with a defender in one of the first matches i played. i thought, at last they've got it right! but it was a fluke. i played season after season with my forwards scoring 30+ goals while my midfielders and defenders rarely found the net. now '03 is released and i have yet to score from a header. the crossing system, both attacking and defending, is a joke. the cpu doesn't even score from corner kicks and the only reason i started scoring from them is because i put the first pass on the ground instead of in the air.

there's a bit more to fifa than a great graphics presentation, but not much. i don't expect a video game to be an exact simulation, but i like to play in a realistic style and fifa is just plain frustrating and unrealistic.
