Fight Night Round 3

This game is amazing. Been playing it for two days straight now, and I've really gotten the hang of it. I've got it for Playstation 2, and it's better than it's predecessors (spell?).

Career mode is a bit deeper than before, and I've just turned pro with my middleweight boxer Leao Terrez from Colombia after knocking the amateur champion three times in the first two rounds! ;)

Anyone else tried this?

I want to go and buy an Xbox 360 with FNR2 now. The graphics on the 360 are seriously the best I've ever seen.

How different is it from FNR2 on the PS2? I was considering getting it, but I decided not to as it look virtually the same except they added 3 new punches.

The differences aren't really very large, but there are some tweaks.

For example, (manual) haymakers are now harder to pull of. They are a bit slower than they were in FNR2, so you really have to find the right moment to do it (not like in R2, where you could almost use them instead of regular hooks and uppercuts).

A totally new thing to this game are "impact punches". Basically, this means that with just one punch, you can knock your opponent to the ground, even though his health meter showed that he was perfectly fit the second before. This is, like in real life, extremely hard to do, but if everything clitches when you throw a haymaker, you might be able to pull it off (I've done it a couple of times).

Also, clinches are in, which is helpful if you have a feeling that you are about to get hit to the ground. Were they there in FNR2? I can't remember.

Different punching, blocking and base stands are added. For example, if you want to create George Foreman, you can make him a slugger, which gives him those extremely heavy punches, which again does more damage to your opponent.

FNR3 on xbox 360 looks really awesome. Played it the other day. But I only own the PS2 version.

Y2K: have you tried to create boxers? I created Mike Tyson and Lennox Lewis. Set Tyson's power to 92, and his speed to 82. His agility was also around mid 80's. But when I'm playing with him in a "friendly" match, his speed, agility and a couple of other stats are suddenly lowered to mid 50's. His power, chin and things like that are still what I set them too, though.

Anyone know what the deal is with this?

When I'm in the edit mode again, his skills are as I set them.

looks really good..

how is the actual in-fight gameplay though, do you actually have to think or does it end up being a button-masher like most of today's fighting games?

This is not at all a button mashing game. Have you played any of the other Fight Night games, Shinji?

The in-game gameplay is very good, and very realistic. You really have to sort of change your fighting style based on what fighter you are up against (and, of course, what fighter YOU are). So if you are playing as, say, Joe Frazier (an extremely hard hitter), up against a physically weaker opponent (for example Roy Jones Jr), it would be wise to use your hard hits as the main weapon, throwing haymakers at him when you get the opportunity to do so, and going for the fast knockout.

But if the tables have turned, and you're controlling Jones Jr against Frazier, you have to play in a completely different way, trying to dodge his hard hits and wear him out, so that you either can win on points, or do an "Ali", like he did Foreman in 1974 ;)

Conclusion: if you want a realistic fighting game, where you actually need some skill, this is the game for you!

FN should have a separate legends sections. I don't like having to create some of today's boxers from scratch. Where are Valdimir and Vitaly ? Also Joe Calzaghe, Zab Judah, Floyd Mayweather Jr, etc.

But gameplay wise, this is a great boxing game. I like playing as a boxer-type, throwin' consistent jabs, scorin' points and goes for the big hit when the opponent is worn out.

Probably some licensing issues with the Klitschko brothers, Mayweather, Judah etc. But there are many good CABs (create-a-boxer) to be found on the internet. Just search for "fight night round 3 cabs" on google or something, and you'll find them all.

Yeah, I play like that too. Throw left hand jabs, waiting for my opponent to throw his shots, dodge them, and, "BOOM!", I throw one back ;)

have you guys been playing online at all? I've been looking for new PS2 online games to try out, just wondering how this game plays over a network

Good stuff, man, good stuff. As a big real boxing/video games boxing fan, I thoroughly enjoyed your great write up and enthusiasm about this game and as a follower of the FN series since Knockout Kings, I'll definitely be picking this one up whenever I get the chance.

Tried a couple of matches on a 360, and it worked very well. Didn't experience any lag at all, and it was basically as if I was playing two player on the same console.

You won't regret it, especially if you're a fan of the series and have played them before ;)

I, at least, found this one to be the best of them (I own every game of the series since Knockout Kings 2002).

I have the demo of this on xbox 360, and I can safely it has the best bloody graphics I've ever seen in a game

I agree. The GFX are jaw-dropping.

And EA's boxing games are known for being quality. I enjoy them.

I got it on PS2 so the graphics are good, but i dno how they are on xbox 360. To be honest i don't think its changed much since Fight Night 2 gameplay wise, still good but i think its meant to be played online (which again i don't have). One thing thats so annoying about the game is the new "Rivalries" they have in Career Mode. You get some random goon with a ginger high top fade calling you out, even if you beat him 4 times out of 4 hes still considered your rival :S The first time I saw the Weigh-In seen where your rival starts punching you I laughed, but i didn't realise you get the scene every single time when you turn into a World Class boxer and fight your rival, the stupid thing is you can't even fight back you just got to block his punchers and wait for the real Boxing Fight to start.
