First taint for anti-racism campaign promoters

BERLIN (AP) - Claims of racist abuse targeting players at the World Cup emerged hours after FIFA and local organizers got together Wednesday to promote the "Say No to Racism" campaign.

France coach Raymond Domenech said black players were taunted as they entered the stadium before their crucial second-round match against Spain at Hanover the previous night.

"When the bus arrives at the stadium, when you hear some fans making monkey chants ... I just turned my head away," Domenech said in Hameln. "I don't even give them the satisfaction of a look."

He declined to say more. Spanish fans had whistled and booed during the French national anthem, the Marseillaise, and several Les Bleus players said that had given them extra incentive to win.

France won 3-1 and plays Brazil in the quarterfinals.

Many reports before the France-Spain match focussed on a controversy in 2004, when Spain coach Luis Aragones was heard making a racist remark about France striker Thierry Henry during a training session. He was fined €3,000 (US$3,760) by Spain's soccer federation, which many felt was too lenient.

He later apologized, denying he was a racist.

Before the World Cup started, the FIFA Congress voted to give the sport's governing body the regulatory power to combat racism by fining, sanctioning or - in extreme cases - banning teams from national or international competition. That made clubs and national associations responsible for the actions of their players and fans.

"The first responsibilities lie with the national associations and if they are not doing what is expected of them then FIFA's executive committee must intervene," FIFA president Sepp Blatter said Wednesday. "The power and the responsibility lies with FIFA. The suspension of a federation is the ultimate sanction available to the disciplinary committee.

"This is a fight against a devil which still exists unfortunately in our sport."

FIFA spokesman Andreas Herren said later Wednesday he had not heard of Domenech's allegations. He said FIFA would investigate if a formal complaint was made.

After a spate of racist attacks in eastern Germany before the World Cup, domestic and international media focussed on xenophobia and right-wing extremists, forecasting clashes between German troublemakers and hooligans from abroad.

Security authorities have been high alert, but local organizers, police and government officials have said they've been caught unprepared for one thing: the camaraderie that the World Cup has stirred.

"Before World Cup started we received information from our security authorities that minorities planned to disturb World Cup by distributing racist and nationalist ideas," said Wolfgang Schaeuble, Germany's Interior Minister. "They were not only not able not to do so, they even gave up."

Just before the opening match on June 9, police in Munich removed a World Cup banner with swastikas from a highway bridge. About the same time in Berlin, police raided the headquarters of a far-right political party, confiscating about 3,000 World Cup guides with racist overtones.

Apart from that, isolated outbreaks of violence have predominantly involved alcohol and traveling fans.

The only trouble with more than 11 million people watching matches on giant TVs at the 12 Fan Fests was overcrowding, with organizers trumpeting peaceful celebrations.

"That's how God must have imagined the party - people of different races unified. The color of their skin, their religion doesn't matter, they all celebrate together World Cup," said Franz Beckenbauer, head of the local organizing committee and one of Germany's greatest players. "This phenomenon is unique. Only soccer can do that."

Germany's results have exceeded expectations, with four wins from four starts getting them into a quarterfinal match against Argentina at Berlin on Friday. The successful run obviously has helped keep order.

"The whole country is in a party mood," said Michael Endler, the head of police headquarters for the World Cup. "This is not fertile soil for violence to spread."

Schaeuble said one soccer tournament would not rid Germany of all its problems, but the World Cup calm was helping.

And while Endler said experience showed the worst danger period was over with the first two rounds complete, German security authorities were not taking it easy.

"In Germany we have a sizable potential for violence that we have to be on guard for," Endler said.

I hope Spain fans keep shouting racist chants and monkey noises so then they can be fined and banned, it's not like they will ever make it past the quarter-finals anyway.

Nice one Spain!

Welcome to the 16th century! Shall we go and colonise the Americas after you've done abusing people of a different skin colour?

Ah the Spanish, they did the same during a friendly against England in 2004. It was the most disgusting thing ive ever seen or heard. But we shouldn't taint the whole Spanish fanbase, like with every nation, it's the idiot few who let them down.

that happens every time a black player steps into a pitch in Italy and no one says ****, it seems after the Spain-England incidents everyone is targeting Spain.

Makes you wonder what will happen after Germany loses to Argentina tomorrow. :S

I think they are not targeting Spain, they are targeting racism......
Spain has a racism problem....yes or no?
Of course not all Spaniards are racist, but they are there, and they cause problems for the country....my wife's aunt is from Galicia, and she is a terrible racist......now of course that doesn't mean all Gallegos are racists.....but it is a problem....

Oh, I absolutely have not forgot about Italy, but everyone who does it needs to be stopped. Thank god the problem is in Europe where there are laws restricting hate speech so it can be censored.

By the way, if something like that ever happened to me, I would do exactly what that one guy did against Inter earlier this season, just walk off the pitch. Except I wouldn't come back on and I would request a transfer the next day. No way I have to deal with that garbage.

Wow, listen to the booing and monkey noises during the French National Anthem when they showed the black players (the booing was through out the whole thing), no wonder France kicked the **** out of Spain. Zidane looked PISSED.

Congrats, because probably you're the only one who can hear monkey noises during the marselleise.

Zidane was pissed because Marca wrote that he would retire after the game. I think he was very correct when he explained it after the game.

I would like to know how many people made the monkey chants. Probably not enough to reopen the debate. If there were any at all. If the police didn't arrest anybody, it won't be easy to prove.

This is getting ridiculous:

Honestly i only saw 2 bad acts in that game:

1) After the 1st France Goal Henry insulted Sergio Ramos (19 years old boy, really that kind of guy never involved in problems) in his face, WHY? Henry already showed in CL final he is a amazing player, but a big moron.

2) With 1-1 Vieira got a yellow card, some minutes later he did a big foul and Aragones stand up to claim the 2nd yellow card (typical action to make pressure for the referee), then Vieira begin to do signs of "sHHHH" to Aragones, it looked really ugly for me, like if Viera was a very bad-mannered guy. Vieira disapointed me, im glad he never came to Real Madrid, cause he is really very bad-mannered, luckily black people usually show more respect than him. But respect is not linked with being black or white.

Im proud of Spain NT, maybe we didnt won the world cup, but we have a bunch of amazing guys, GOOD GUYS and they are a very good example for our people here in spain, showing respect, skill, sportmanship, never showed racism or disrespect to other teams,... France Team cant say the same.

Noone in the crowd did the monkey sound, but who cares? France players were just angry cause they think we hate black people and that stuff, and thats not true, there are some racist guys, but much much less than in France or Germany where inmigrant are killed usually. In Spain racist incident are not usual.

In France : a few familys got his home flamed, and they die, cause the act of a few racist vandals = France people are cool and love the inmigrants.
In Spain : Etoo (a richman and famous guy) get the monkey noise a few minutes in the whole league, by maybe 100-200 guys = Whole Spain are a bunch of bastards racists.

You all dont know Spain, please stop judging, its like i say whole USA people its ******* stupid cause they voted BUSH, whats up with the other people that doesnt want WAR? This is more or less the same, in spain there are only a few racist people, maybe only 5% as much, and you all judge 100% of Spain as racist people, you all really sucks guys.

Im really proud of my country cause until 1975 we had a fascist goverment, and in last 30 years everything changed for good!! and we are even improving being a good example for other countries. Why we ad a Fascist goverment since 1939 to 1975? Cause the allied countries didnt had the balls to defeat Franco, many spaniards gave his life to defeat France (hoping beating Hitler was the 1st step to beat Franco later) against Hitler in 1940-45, but French people always forget them, cause they didnt had the balls to give that help back.

Ending: We are not racist, maybe we had a bad football team, but thats all, we are not racist, sorry to dissapoint you.

Whoever says Spain is a racist country has no ******* clue what they're talking about, racial discrimination is much bigger in countries like Italy or Switzerland than it is in Spain. But of course talking about racism issues involving Spain sells more, especially after all the Aragones/England incidents. How come no one said **** when the serbians booed the Argentinian anthem, which as a result made the argentinians do the same thing (understandable).

I am in no way defending racism, i'm 100% against it and agree with everything ShiftyPowers said (except on what he said about spanish fans booing during the french anthem, which i didnt hear). I'm just sick that the press is trying to project a bad image of the spanish ppl.

Crusd3r why is Domenech an asshole? He did the right thing speaking up against racism, complete opposite of what most coaches/players do in Italy.

And to the guy that talked about his wife's aunt being racist and being from Galicia, well you know what who gives a sh!t. I've visited tons of countries around the world, lived in 5 different countries throughout my life and I can tell you there are racist pricks everywhere no need for you to talk about your wife's aunt.

Congratulations to you...I was giving an example of how to say that just because a few people are racist, you shouldn't brand the whole country as racist, dipsh!t.
I was actually agreeing with you.....sorry if you didn't like my example....

and @Crusader...bravo, very intelligent post...

Racism is a problem wherever it is...and that's the point here...

The bottom line is, you get racists everywhere and unfortunately it will take decades until the problem of racism is completely gone.

Oh, and if English fans were racist throughout our WC games we would of already been banned from the major competitions :kader:
