Well here's how it went with Portugal in South Africa. Warning pretty lengthy post with many screenies:
We started off with a match vs Togo, pretty easy match and we won comfortably with 3-1 only bad thing about this match was my two injured AMC's: Moutinho and Deco though they were only out for respectively 5 days and 1 week.
From there on we went to our, on paper atleast, toughest opponent in the group stage which was the USA. But we got on top pretty easily and won 1-0. I even feel we could've had a bigger score. Again an injury to a key figure and this time it was bad: my main striker Helder Postiga got injured for one month and so it was end of the tournament for him.
The last match in the group vs Slovenia was no more than a friendly as I had already assured myself of the first spot in Group G. 1-1 was the final standing, Makukula scoring his first goal for Portugal and playing well. Togo progressed through as second in the group.
We got Mali in the second round, who progressed pretty surprisingly. At the start of the match they shown why as they audaciously took the lead in the 33rd minute by a goal of Bagayoko. After that goal Portugal woke up and started a big attacking spell, but couldn't draw the match until Makukula scored again after he tucked away a rebound. So the game was all square and it looked as though Portugal was going to decide before the end of 90 minutes, but they didn't and so the match went to penalty kicks. The penalty series started off with many misses at both sides but eventually the teams draw level and after five pen kicks it still was level as Liverpool defender Djimi Traore stepped up and missed. Ricardo Vaz Te the star from Bolton decided the match with a dry and cool shot in the top right corner. Portugal progressed through to the quarter finals where they would meet another nation who was doing surprisingly well, Ireland.
Ireland, with Everton winger Kevin Kilbane playing his hundred cap for Ireland, dominated the quarter final for the entire game and got the better chances. But it was Vaz Te again who put Portugal ahead 0-1 just ten minutes before the break and so I looked to sustain the lead after the break. We initially failed in doing so because Tottenham striker Robbie Keane levelled the match. But then Chelsea star Moutinho came to the rescue. Portugal left back Valdir crossed the ball in for target men Makukula who nodded it on for the free Moutinho who cooly placed the ball past Shay Given to make it 1-2. That was the moment when Ireland broke for the first time. The game was completly put beyond doubt when Vaz Te bagged his second of the game and Portugal's third. Portugal played concentrated and professionaly for the rest of the game and progressed through to the semi finals!
The semi final between Portugal and Argentina was a very even match with both teams having good chances. But it lasted until the final minutes until the deadlock was broken. Lisandro Lopez put Argentina in front in the 88th minute. Portugal had only little time left to turn it around and weren't able to do so although Deco had a good chance right at the death. The game was completly put beyond doubt by Sergio Aguero when the goal was empty as Moreira had joined the attack in a corner: 2-0.
All what was left for the desolated Portugal squad was the third place playoff versus England. Man of the tournament for Portugal Ricardo Vaz Te set course to that third place by tapping in a rebound past Everton goalie Craig Gallagher in the fifth minute. But the match drew pretty quick as Arsenal star Defoe put in a screamer from 25 yards out after a mistake by young Portugal left back Andre Caiado. The match was pretty dull after that finally decided in penalties by Roma winger Shaun-Wright Phillips in favour of England. So Portugal ended the World Cup 2010 in South Africa as fourth. The trainer was said to be looking forward to the European Cup 2012 thereby denying rumours of him moving to his native country Holland who failed miserably in the WC only ending 3rd in their group.
