It looked like he just lost his footing and fell, but the above explanation is much funnier.

No no, Mr. Johnson, you see, you can make a play for the ball with your head, but it needs to be at least waist level, or else it's dangerous play (think of a high-boot, but this is the opposite, a "low head" i suppose).
