Graham Poll To Quit

Graham Poll has blown the whistle on his career as the Premiership's top referee by announcing he will retire after taking charge of Sunday's game between Portsmouth and Arsenal.

The controversial Tring official could stay in the game for another six years but has decided to call it a day after a series of controversial incidents.

He is tired of being on the wrong end of a constant barrage of criticism from managers, players and fans who have accused him of spoiling games by hogging the limelight and taking centre stage.

Poll's latest run-in was at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday when he clashed with Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho.

It's not the first time the official has had a run-in with the Blues as there was furore after he sent John Terry from the pitch in a 2-1 defeat at Tottenham in November.

Chelsea accused him of claiming they 'needed to be taught a lesson' after he was surrounded by their players after a goal was disallowed in the frenetic London derby.

There was more outrage when the 43-year-old match official took charge of his very next game and flashed a red card at Everton's James McFadden for calling him 'a cheat'.

Spurs were then unhappy with him when he wrongly gave Arsenal two penalties in their 3-0 defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium in December.

And the Gunners were just as livid when he refused to award two clear spot-kicks in an FA Cup clash with Blackburn before they crashed out of the competition in the replay.

But Poll's biggest blunder was at the World Cup last summer when he only sent off a Croatian defender after showing him a yellow card for a third time.

The massive clanger cost him any chance of being in charge of the World Cup final and he retired from international football.

Referee's boss Keith Hackett has unsuccessfully tried to talk Poll into changing his mind and it is believed he may now be heading for a job in television - possibly with new kids on the block Setanta.

Mourinho didnt say that crap. He just said he had a normal performance as usual. As in this is the way he referees all the time. Mark Hughes also said the guy likes the spotlight. But fact is he cant perform in the spotlight.

Best news I've heard in a while. Useless tard of a ref with quite possibly the biggest ego of any match official in the history of the game. Good riddance Poll you w*nker.

The referees in the premier league are dodgy thats obvious. But when it comes to cheating i think they try their best to book for diving and so on compared to elsewhere. But key decisions are missed and they make numerous errors. I;d say this guy should have called it a day long time ago. But its not an easy job. No one in this forum has the balls to be a referee and its easy to come in here and criticize from the back of a computer. But maybe they can take death threats from football fans and still go out and perform. Ask Chelsea wouldnt be the first time they threatned a ref or two.

Hard job. This guy was just not able to handle the pressure.

The referees in the Premierleague are some of the best... sure they make mistakes like anyone else, but they try to use common sense as much as possible, which is a terrific thing.

When I have to watch French league matches here, it makes me want to cry.

LOLOL exactly. I dont think we would get free flowing football if we hired Mr Cantalejo from Spanish league. It will be like American football start stop start stop start stop red card. Look how big games have been ruined by over zealous refereein abroad.

There you go again you gloryhunting muppet. What is it with you and Chelsea huh? You cannot make one single post without mentioning Chelsea in one way or another.

For your information, (not that you really wanna know of course), it was ALLEDGEDLY a single (as in ONE), Norweigan Chelsea fan who was supposed to have threatened Anders Frisk. That is ONE fan out of a worldwide fanbase of millions. Do we blame ALL Man U fans just because a minority cause trouble in Europe? Do we blame all Man U fans when a minority of them throw bags filled with s.h.it at opposing fans at matches? No, because we are smarter than that.

Try sticking to the subject at hand instead of making all your posts Chelsea related. Your obsession with us is pathetic mate.

As for Poll retiring. Thank God. He has been the worst referee in the top flight of football for as long as I can remember. He is indeed an ego on legs. I guess the next thing we will see is his new book, his new TV show and his own range of fashion items.

This guy has decided the final score of too many matches to mention. Everyone everywhere has slagged him off and the FA always defended him.

A good referee is never noticed as the old saying goes. You can't say that about Poll.

Cuntalejo, him who grassed on Zidane in the World Cup final when the others didn't see it. Never a game goes by in La Liga under his officiating without a red card or three. Absolute cunt of a ref. :nape:

Anyone see the Lazio- Fiorentina match a few weeks ago? (where Mutu scored the winner late in the game 1-0). It was hilarious to watch, i've never seen a ref blow so many whistles, the game got completely out of hand and every player on both teams were fouling non stop. It was like the way to defend. The ref didn't give out enough yellow cards and wasn't strict enough and the game just turned for the worse.

Wow, you're defending Zidane by saying no one else saw the headbutt. The ref did a great job then by spotting it. You're saying "grassed" (?) as in it was the wrong decision.

next up.. Uriah rennie
That would be the plan.. but we would need to get another black referee to come up the ranks and in the Premierleague because Rennie is tokenistic-tastic.

He even used that himself as a complaint when he was demoted because of crapness, the bastard!

Uriah Rennie makes bad decisions but hes not fazed by the spotlight. He makes his own decisions regardless of crowd noise. Poll and a few others listen to the crowd a lot.

Tell that to the russian mafia. Obsession you guys bought 4 titles how can that no draw attention. Your manager complains about decisions and referees but who gets the most favourable decisions when Joe Cole, Wright phillips and Robben take the tumble. Look at the Arsenal game your players where rolling about and Chelsea were getting all the decisions. But it seems the whole world is against overrated Chelsea. LOL

Come on man. A world exists bar Chelsea. Mourinho whines too much about decisions and injuries man. Poll should stay maybe Chelsea can pay him to throw some matches.

I said he GRASSED because the ref and his two linesmen never saw it numbnuts. Its like a kid in school going to tell teacher because he saw someone hit someone else. I don't condone what ZZ did, though Materazzi is a bit of a twunt anyway, he had it coming!!
