Great Britons

Currently British TV has been running a series called 'Great Britons'.

Basically, they have picked the 10 greatest Britons of all time and have got celebs to put forward debate style arguments for each one allowing to public to vote for the greatest.

Out of the Ten they selected, who, in your opinion, is the greatest?

who are the celebs? In terms of historical contribution and lasting-effects, i would also have to say Newton. So it will be interesting to see the celebs debating the finer points of physics :o :p (H)

Perhaps *celebs* is the wrong word. Well know personalities would be neare the mark. People like Politions, Historians, Correspondents etc.

How did John Lennon make that list? He did nothing.......:f***: :crazyboy: (H)

Gotta say Newton......, he seems to have had the greatest 'positive' significance', especially more than Lennon,

Hold on......

Extreme amount of the laws of physics discoveries versus sang some gay songs.........

f*ck the lot of them

how about Lord Roberts (who happens to be a distant ancestor of mine)

why the f*ck was he not even included in the top 100?

he was the most popular man in Britain in 1900 apart from Royalty.

but no todays society doesn't want to recognise anyone who helped build the Empire, yet they remember someone who slaughtered thousands of Irishmen.

1857 - single handedly re-capturing a standard from two indian sepoys, who were armed.
(the Standard was crucial in warfare, if it was captured then u lost)

1880 - Led the Kabul to Kandahar march, one of Britain greatest ever military feats - this is what Roberts is best remebered for

1900 - As Commander-in-Chief (Jan - Oct 1900) of the British forces in South Africa destroyed the Boers to the point that they didn't have a standing army, and formally annexed the 2 Boer republics. And at the age of 68!. the conflict only dragged on until 1902 coz Kitchener, who succeeded Roberts as C-in-C in South Africa, couldn't mop up the remaining Boer resistance. Roberts left South Africa coz...

...1901 - Became C-in-C for the whole British Army, and was the last person to hold that position (abolished 1904)

plus he is also remembered for countless other acts of heroism, and rated as the greatest Officier of the age.

The Empire is the only thing that makes Great Britain great, so anyone who helped build or maintain the Empire should be recognised. Without the Empire this country would be like any other country.

I watched that show. It should have been called 'great english people'. There where under 20 people who weren't english and I only made it to no. 48.

Yeah but which Scottish/Welsh/Irish people would you rank up there with the likes of Newton, Churchill and Brunel?

What was a bit unfair was the way they refered to Victoria and Elizabeth II as Queen's of England rather than Queen's of Britain but besides that I think it was nationisticly correct.

For a scottish bloke, I reckon Adam Smith should be in there. I don't agree with the bulk of his ideas, and disagree with his political stance, but in the area of Political Economy he laid the groundwork for future understanding and critiques of capitalism. His ideas continue to inform most economic analysis, and as we all know economics occupies a large place in present issues.

As for the Welsh, well there is always Ryan Giggs (H) or Catherine Zeta Jones :hump:

Scotland could also have Fleming (for his discovery of Penicillan) I suppose - better him than Diana or Lenon. Also Baerd (sp?? - the guy who invented the television) would be a top 20 candidate.
