The only thing that I am good at is free kicks, and I've seen this question a couple times, so here is my advice. This might not work for some people but it works for me:
1) If you are within 30m of the goal always go with the shot.
2) Pretend the sidelines of the 18 extended to the other endline, always take a shot if you are in between those lines
3) Going over is better than going around.
Going over
1) Line the ball up with the open part of goal and make sure the wall is in between.
2)Hold the shoot button until the power is about half way. (If you playwith Man U. and your players name is on the left side of the screen, I hold down shoot until it is at the "O" in Ronaldo.)
3) Push the left analog stick forwards, between when you press shoot and kick the ball.
Corner Kick
1) make sure you are kicking with your outside foot.
2) Nudge the right analog stick bust a bit to the outside.
3) Hold shoot until it's in the middle
4) Push the left analog stick all the way to the inside.
