Has anyone fixed the desktop exit bug?

I am at my wits end. 100's of hours. Reinstalling windows, drivers, tweaking my system, downloading fixes that didnt work, buying 100s of dollars in new sound and graphics cards, just to have this goddam game exit to the desktop everytime I play iT!!!! I talked to ea, and they told me to take it back. HAS ANYONE gotten past this, or is this game only randomly compatable with some systems.

Has anyone fixed it? Can someone help me? please.

there is not such bug AFAIK

if you have
1/ original FIFA 2003 double CD
2/ a recommended (or supported at least) graphics card
3/ latest drivers
4/ directX 8.1
5/ windows compatible sound card
6/ supported keyboard or gamepad

the game shouldn't crash

There is such a bug that is why I cant playing fuing game!

Have the cd.
radeon 8500 and 9700
lastest drivers from ati
dir x 9
compat sound card
MS gamepad

AND IT STILL CRASHES. Many people have this problem., IT IS A CODE PROBLEM. I myself and many other experts have had the same problem with the only solution being take it back and enjoy fifa 2002 for another year.

believe me, this bug exists.
i have the same problem and i know two other guys who are suffering because of it.
there is obviously now way to solve the problem.
by the way: fifa2003 is the only game (yet) that is not running on my system. so it is definitely not a driver or directX problem.

is it some program running in the background, that makes it go to the desktop, try closing all other stuff when you play.

mite suggest a no cd patch as well. i have bought the game, etc, but i use one coz it sometimes had probs reading the cd. im also lazy and dont like changing the discs around when playing other games

Exit to windows is NOT a bug, bugs in the game happen to everyone who owns it, does this happen to everyone? Didn't think so.

Easy for you to say, your not one of the people ramdonly choesen by ea not to let them play their game because of a BUG that makes it ramdonly exit to the desktop every match!!

If you havent suffered from this bug or you dont have a solution idea then dont post, jive turkey.

The close background apps is a no, and the no cd doesnt work either I have tried everything.

i installed a second windows on my hd (in order not to crash my running os) and installed latest drivers and directx (8.1 form the game cd). then i changed the desktop resolution to 256 colours and 800x600. restarted windows and finally it works (well sometimes it does).

i see your using directx 9, no games have been made for this platform yet, stick to 8.1, try low resolutions and see if it helps.

Thanks for the advise but in this case nothing works. I have tried at every resoution, without the sound, even no sound cards, the worst resoluiton/detail and the best..and it all doesnt work. The only time I am ever able to play the game is when I reinstall my card and drivers and fifa, then only sometimes I am able to play un-interuppted, but inevitably it goes back to its evil ways. I have tried everything. We just have been chosen NOT to play this game by some random, miniscule problem with fifa.

I bought the game when it first came out. I played it trouble free for a couple of weeks before returning to TCM2003 where I am doing some patch work. I decided to have a game of FIFA2003 last night for the first time in a while and I am having the exit to desktop problem. I haven't added any patches for FIFA2003, I've re-installed it, closed all background apps and I still cannot get it working. This is the same problem a lot of people used to get with TCM2003 until EA released a patch. This is a bug and it needs patched.

BTW , just fixed my problem- sorry but I don't think this is exactly the problem you guys had. I'm running XP so I created another account and logged in with that. The game runs fine, still cannot get it to run with my default account. The profile must be gubbed.

Hey amigo,

As you probably have found out already, the other account thing doesnt work. I got to play about 4 matches though, and them, poof, game over, back to desktop, time to download more porn and pretend that I didnt waste 70 dollars, including internatinal shipping!

Making new account worked for me with XP, thanks for the tip

Also tried this and it gets the game started although it doesnt allow you to start a new season, only allows you to continue a pre saved season or game.


take the "Video" file out of the folder named

CProgram Files\EA SPORTS\FIFA 2003\data\feart\VIDEO

I'm glad I found this thread cos the same thing has just started happening to me.

The first time I installed fifa 2003, it was fine, great infact... I recently got myself a new hard drive and reinstalled fifa 2003 only to have it quit back out to windows!
I've tried everything but to no avail.

Oh and I also checked out the FIFA 2003_EZ in the support file and for some odd reason it tells me that my AMD K6-2 does not classify as the minimum requirements!? It has nice green ticks alongside everything but a nasty red cross next to my CPU cos it isnt a Pentium II. Now why the hell it is doing this I don't know, cos it clearly states in the readme that AMD K6-2 are FINE!
Also I KNOW that it is fine cos It was working the first time I installed the damned thing! grrr....
Please someone tell me that You can help me...

Solve the desktop problem !

I am also familar with the "Desktop crash problem" but have seemed to fix it. This may not work for everyone however. When I install (any install type), the game plays the intro video then crashes to the desktop on activating "Press Any key". I tried almost everything and was almost ready for 2002 again. Trying all the fixes that people are being told, I tried something different that most would think should not affect the game. I installed from a different CD drive. This time i tried from a mitsumi CD-writer instead of a Pioneer CD-rom and it works everytime.

Are some CD drives having problems reading the data on the game discs ?

Who knows these answers anyway.

Give it go if you have a second drive to install from.

I doubt very much the idea of closing all b/g programs etc as I have run the game with quite a few running and didnt affect what so ever. I think we need to look closer at the problem.

Mine doesn't even get to the intro anymore, I get a black screen for about 1 second then it quits back to windows.

Okay I wont even get as far as a black screen anymore! It starts to load and as soon as the fifa logo disapears, I get an error message "fifa 2003 has performed an illegal operation and will shut down..."

I've reinstalled it twice but I still get the error message!
