I have had every single version of Fifa since 1996. And it is still the only game I play on computers. Fifa 11 has introduced a lot of nice features, so even if there's a list of annoyances coming here, I don't think it's all bad. But having played the game now since the moment it came out, I've come across a couple of things that really p**s me off. Here we go in no particular order:
1. Defenders have totally unrealistic advantages: My striker gets the ball and runs towards the goal. A defender comes from behind and manages to push the striker aside without fouling him. This may happen from time to time, but normally the striker would cover the ball with his body thus not allowing the defender behind him to come even near the ball. In fact this covering the ball is nearly impossible in Fifa 11.
2. Players "hesitate" when getting the ball. I have this not always but pretty often. Example one: most players are in my half, I get the ball and play a through pass into free space while a striker is already running there. As soon as he has the ball he stops before running on thus giving the opposite defender plenty of time to tackle. No player would stop in such a situation. Example two: I play the ball into the penalty area where a striker is waiting. I press "shoot" even before he has the ball. Nevertheless he will not shoot directly but instead stop when he gets the ball, thus allowing ... you know the story.
3. Referees ignore obvious fouls. Pretty much all the time I get tackles from opposite defenders which do not even touch the ball, my player falls, the ball is gone, no whistle.
4. Referees have a pretty random manner of giving yellow or red cards in some situations. When launching a counter attack my player gets fouled when just entering the opposite half while there's no opposite defender before him (i.e. he would be "through"). Never a red card, sometimes not even a yellow one. Also lots of situations where a player is fouled when he would be "through" (though there still are opposite defenders, but just too far to have any chance to get to the ball). Never a red card.
5. The shooting model ("powering up") makes the game slow and makes quick shots nearly impossible. I prefer a short passing game. When I get a striker into position near the goal and I want to launch a direct shot the player will either stop (see above) or there's a pretty high probability that the direct shot will be very soft as in such situations there is no sufficient time for "powering up". I think that more automatic control on the strength of shots would help, I don't like the "powering up" at all.
6. The AI for directing passes fails too often. In many cases, in particular in situations of quick play, passes go far from where they're directed. This happens very often when near the goal, i.e. if a winger goes near the goal line and than passes into the center - I direct the pass flat but it will almost always go diagonal, in any case very far from where it's been directed to. It is even more impossible to play the ball backwards, e.g. just outside the box where an attacking midfielder is waiting. This is very frustrating.
7. If a player has rather low finishing ability (which is the case for many players) he will hit the post with a totally ridiculous probability. Actually, even if a defender appears alone before the goal keeper he will still have a quota of more than 50% in real life. In the game it's below 30%.
8. When sprinting, there is no way to control a player. Wingers will often run from the field because the direction control is almost ignored. Also there is no way to dribble around an opponent. Think of Lionel Messi running straight into the defender with the ball! Also there is a significant delay for anything a player does when sprinting. That makes timing shots extremely difficult. Again, if in real life a player sprints he will still be able to time a shot properly if he knows when and where. In Fifa 11 this is not possible, the delay will almost always lead to the player losing the ball because due to bad timing the opposite defender will have a chance to tackle.
9. After having played a couple of matches the game does not react properly anymore. It seems like some kind of saturation effect, i.e. the input from the controller reaches the game with some kind of delay. Not sure if this is a problem of the game or just plain **** Windows Vista.
10. Lobs are so low that it is practically impossible to start a counter attack by lobbing over the defense line. I get the ball while defending against an attack, the opposit half is almost empty, I play a long lob into the opposite half having triggered a run for my central striker who is already alone in free space. However the lob is always so low that the opposition's defenders between the ball and my striker have a chance to intercept it. This makes lobs practically useless.
