one strategy you can use is buy original players of the team you picked (and who consequently become jobless, because they are replaced by default players).
for example, i picked Real for my first ML Extreme session, and i was able to buy Salgado, Pavon, Guti, Solari and Morientes in the first season, because all you have to pay for is their salary. When you don't lose, and put in 2 or 3 wins, the rest draws, the money will just be enough to make it to the next season
that said, even with those guys (and a little cheating) it took me 3 seasons until i finally advanced by beating fvcking Aston Villa in the relegation.... (In the first season I scored 1, repeat ONE goal -- Castello, not Morientes...)
