I know not much can be done with the PS2 having reached its limits as far as the PES series goes (see Seabass interviews, or not as Konami took them down) but 1 thing I hope they take out is that stupid "Stagger" which seems only to effect Human players never the CPU one's!

You'll know the one, your running (default pace) and a cpu player runs into you or sticks a foot out and as you stagger you do a 180 turn and either stagger a few steps backwards ( enough time to allow the cpu to take the ball ) or land on your £rse!

This happens far to often in the game and if taken out would make the play that much better.

That's primarily because it's a PS2 port. If they had a dedicated team working on the PC release separate from the PS version, then we might get a smooth running game on low spec machines. Rumour has it this is exactly what they are going to do for PES5. They certainly need to do this if they want to capture a wider share of the PC market.

The problem with all these little staggers and ref bias and cheats and all the other little things we complain about is that they are almost necessary to keep some semblance of a challenge in the game. We want realsitic flow and gameplay from PES/WE, but the AI is limited by the processor, which is way below the graphics capabilties. Everyone of us gets to the point even on 5* and 6* where we can consistently win, even with all these little cheat issues. If they weren't there, we'd be winning every game 6-0 and bored to tears. Konami is stuck in a difficult spot. Do they give us the realistic gameplay we crave and tweak the bias so the challenge is there? Or do they give us a scripted, nonflowing game like FIFA, where the d's sit back and MF's don't press and the challenge is in the button-mashing.

I think by PS3, we'll see a huge jump in AI programability and therefore, Konami will be able to get rid of some of these quirks to give us an even better experience.

to be honest, if past experience is anything to go by, i'm not expecting the AI cheating to reduce

ISS Pro Evo 2 on PS1 had less cheating, then through the PES series on PES, from PES1 to PES4, the amount of cheating has steadily increased - this has coincided with increased freedom in the gameplay - the more you can do, the more the AI needs to be able to counter it, and Konami's method of countering it is to basically cheat

and there's still an awful lot more they can do to increase the freedom - just think about true analogue passing alone, where you can pass in 360 degrees at whatever speed you want, rather than the current scripted system - that could dramatically effect the gameplay and it will need to be countered - i think that will mean even more AI cheating

hopefully 2-player and on-line mode will be dramatically improved so the need for an AI opponent will be reduced - at the moment, on-line play is poor and unenjoyable but is only their first attempt

Bingo! Aqua, you nailed it. I laugh when FIFA fans point to these isssues as the major gameplay flaws within PES/WE when in actuality they are a necessary evil designed by Konami to counter the incredible gameplay they give us and the AI can't possibly keep up with. You are right that online is the future. Maybe by the 2nd iteration of the series on next-gen consoles we'll have true online ML where we all take a team and draft players from scratch. Now that will be a blast!
