I signed Mexes on free transfer and it made me play like 5000+ points for a transfer fee? I thought there wasn't a fee.

How do I sign players on free transfer?

My basic response would have to be, he wasn't a free transfer then!
Usually the first day of transfers after you have finished a season, you have tons of players who need to resign a contract with their clubs, if you are able to snag one of these guys, then there will be no transfer fee. It's called the Bosman Rule I believe, anyway, this is the only way to acquire a player without an added fee! Other than that, even players without a team that you are buying through the national teams selection will have a transfer fee. To find these "free" players, use the search function with the parameter that the min and max contract lengths are zero for both, this will give you a list of all the players needing to resign. If you don't get them in that first day of transfers though, the next day, almost 99% of them will have resigned with their club! Hope this clarified what you were wondering about.

Not really.. I know what free transfers are, I just want to know why I am Auxerre (so my players all went to free transfer at the start) and I signed Mexes (w/o a team) and it cost me transfer points.

That's the ML in WE7 for you man! No matter what team you start with, all those original players will be on their national squads as if they were never with their team! I believe it's just Konami's way of making it more challenging so that you can't acquire good players right away. Like I said, the only way to get ANY player on a free transfer is how i mentioned. it's as simple as that though! I know in WE6 it was different, they simply just changed that though. It should make the ML more challenging though, which is a plus I would assume!

I hear ya man but the ML doesn't make that much sense as whole either! Thank god Konami have great gameplay to support their lack of realism in other areas!

Last night i put in bids for Saha, Cisse and another high powered, expensive striker. I was hopring to get just one. I got all three. I already had Andy Cole, Sanchez, Drogoba and Huylens. This is gonna be ineresting.
The good thing about free transfers is that if u are able to sigh a good player on a free transer you find that the computer will want to buy him as soon as the next year starts. It's a good way to make a quick profit.
Does remaining contract length effect the computer when deciding to ask for a transfer for a player? In other words will the computer be more likely to make an offer on a player with 5 years remaining on his contract rather than the same player with 2 years left?

You know, sometimes it seems very random to me, like I would buy a player, then during that same transfer period, another teams bids for the guy I just bought!? Occassionally i se something that makes sense, i.e. one of my players does excellent in a season and I see bids, but I don't see many logical attempts. It might be what you have your transfer setting at. I think the more strict they are, the more intelligent the bids will seem, i dunno, hopefully someone with more knowledge can add on!

Some players you just won't be able to get, others just won't sign with you if you are a div. 2 team. Also in consideration, how well you are doing in your season. Also, if you have not noticed yet, when bidding on more than one player at a time, this can change the price each player might accept depending on how much you offer another player! The formula can be quite confusing overall. To be honest, I turn my autosave off when negotiation period begins. If I don't get the player the first time, I exit, then re-enter ML mode and try again to get a player, may seem like cheating, I just consider it as it is called, a negotiation where I and the comp are trying to come to an agreable price. What I recommend, don't try to acquire many players at once if you expect to get all of them, their seems to be a better chance of getting most of the players you want when going for them one at a time. Also, some players will just require a little more cash to be forked over! This also applies for regular transfer players as well. The best option for regular transfers though it to trade players, this will save you the most cash! The best answer I can really give you though is experiment! You might find a more successful process for yourself!

I have just been promoted in my first season in Div 2. being unbeaten all season in the league - just went out in the first round of the cup. When I went to free transfers these are the transfers I have managed to acquire on frees:
• Steven Gerrard
• Robert Pires
• Sol Campbell
• Brad Friedel
• John Carew
Admittedly I had to pay them all a salary of around 1,000 points a season but I have 19,000 points from a very successful selling and trading spell, as well as unbeaten season and top goal scorer etc.
Have other people experienced getting players this good so quickly?

Truthfully, I still haven't figured the free transfer thing out. I got Totti on a free transfer, but Henry, Olisadebe and others cost me big points. Then I acquired Rivaldo successfully during the off-season, went negative (w/ no warning from the computer), and got the game over death message when I went to the next week.
I like the WE6:I system better where players on your real original team can be had with no transfer fees!
My only tip: DO NOT enable auto-save. It cost me my entire first season at ML.

I only keep my autosave on for two reasons, one: so I don't forget to save; two: I am not tempted to cheat and replay a team during the season. God knows there were plenty of times when I felt cheated and wanted to replay the focks! I actually recommend having autosave on! except during the off-season during the negotiation period!

MAN, WE7i is so much better than the already terrific WE6! It's unbelievable! Anyway...
I just finished my 2nd WE7i ML season in Div. 2 as Liverpool (finished 3rd in promotion playoffs 1st season, got promoted 2nd season), and went to the off-season trading period. I also turn off autosave during this trading period, because the way I see it in real life, trading is a dialogue instead of making an offer, having it be rejected, then waiting 2 weeks to be able to make another offer. That's just dumb. Anyway, as a team that is technically still in Div. 2 I found it impossible to get the top-tier players off free agency. I tried to sign Pires, Nedved, and Cannavaro as free agents, and I even offered 100 WEN more per player than they were being paid by their clubs, but they still wouldn't come even after loading and retrying 3 times. I guess I'll just have to start kicking tail in Div. 1 before the best ones will transfer. There is one exception though: I managed to get Ljungberg in exchange for Gronkjaer, plus transfer fee of course. Then again, their stats aren't that far apart except for the stats which mattered to me, so that might've made the transfer more acceptable in the computer's view.
Getting unsigned players at this level is much easier it seems. Even a superstar like Owen accepted my signing offer, albeit with an astronomical "transfer fee" asking price--roughly 14900 WEN. Just while experimenting with transfers I succeeded in getting (not all at once) Denpo (?), Salas, Oliseh, and Hyppia, all previously unsigned.
I'm definitely anxious to do well in Div. 1 and see if this affects transfers at all. I have all transfer difficulties set to default values, which from their descriptions seemed like reasonably good settings. We'll see how much standings and performance make a difference.

I had to offer 2-300 more salary points to sign the likes of Gerrard and Sol Campbell but the way I look at it is - like the Bosman free in real life - you haven't got to fork out for a transfer fee so spend some of that on the players salary. The only players on I haven't got successfully have been Fadiga from Inter and Duff on a part exchange - but then Duff's stats and salary are quite underated. A good tip for buying from the start - Takahara (not the one who plays for Hamburg) but he is in the Japanese country search. Scored 11in9.
