How do you define realistic goalkeepers in the game?

Hi There
A couple of people in this forum have criticised how the keepers in FIFA 2003 fly like "superman". I was wondering, how do you program a keeper to be as realistic as in real life? If the keeper saves like a "superman", then people will criticise EA SPORTS for an unrealistic representation of real life keepers. If the keeper "fumbles", "lets in easy goals", people will then criticise EA SPORTS for their unrealistic AI.

Really, in real life, keepers can sometimes fly like "superman" and make some of the most unbelievable saves that leaves your jaw wide open in astonishment. However, other times, they can basically turn some schoolboy shots into goals. Take Barthez for example. Last year against Arsenal, he really made some schoolboy mistakes, which resulted as goals. A couple of weeks ago, I saw a goal in the English Premiership, which a player threw the ball to the keeper, and the keeper totally missed the ball. It ended up as a goal.

So what’s my point? How do you draw a line and define a realistic goalkeeper in the game?

Like another well-known soccer PS2 game...ahem ???,
the factor that defines whether a shot is saved or not depends
on some function(Keeper-Ability x Randomness)
That will give you real life-like AI.

For example :
good keepers like Kahn, Dudek, Buffon should have high goalkeeping ability points.

lousy keepers like the keepers of some 3rd division team for example would have low ability points.

Depending on the randomness factor, a good goalkeeper will have the higher probability of saving a shot
and a lousy keeper will have a lower probability of saving the shot.

Hope this helps

i dont understand why people say the goal keeper is superhuman coz they still act foolishly...

a couple of times now when someone takes a freekick at me from an acute angle my goalkeeper saves it but because he was moveing from side to side, momentum carried him into the net making an own goal.

besides, its not really hard to score :hump:
