IGN hands on preview: only 140 teams in 360!!

Crap! Some might say I don't care as long as EPL or La Liga or Serie A is in there but, still, that's crap!! :

(edit: EA confirms there are 156 teams on the final release)

EA rebuilds its next-gen soccer title from the ground up. How does it feel?

The first true FIFA title on 360 is finally upon us. Toss out the disaster that was FIFA 06: Road to the World Cup and the satisfying-but-shallow 2006 FIFA World Cup. A new generation of FIFA is upon us with FIFA 07.

EA has made a point to build from the ground up with its next-gen sports titles, as we've seen with Madden, NBA Live and the upcoming NHL 07. NBA Live 06 was mediocre at best; Madden NFL 06 was nowhere near as deep or fun as the current-generation game. Only NHL 07 shows true promise after taking a year off to fully develop a title. By scrapping all the code that came before it FIFA 07 promises to be a new experience. But does it suffer the "from-the-ground-up" problems that other EA games suffer on the 360? A little bit, yeah.

FIFA 07 borrows some of the same technology from other EA titles. The ball physics that completely remove the ball from the players and make it its own, non-magnetic entity are clearly akin to the excellent puck physics in NHL 07. And players now take one step at a time, planting and cutting off each foot, just like the new player models in NBA Live 07.

Other than that, though, the gameplay feels quite similar to recent FIFA games. We picked up the controllers and got right into a heated battle between Barcelona and Liverpool. Ronaldinho is fast, and the new ball physics and player momentum allow him to blow by poorly-positioned defenders. Dribbling is a bit more fun than in previous soccer games because you really feel as if you are creating moves, thanks mostly to the right-analog stick.

Ah, the right-analog stick. From the same company that brought us Fight Night's Total Punch Control and Tiger's analog swing system, we are now blessed with right analog stick dribbling. Well, dribbling is not the accurate term really. By flicking the right analog stick in a direction, the player will flick the ball a few yards away. Ideally you could do this in any direction, but it seemed we could only get it to go in eight.

There are a lot of possibilities here. Seemingly, you could flick the ball past a defender to his left, sprint by on his right and meet the ball on the other side. You can flick straight at a defender and try for a nutmeg. We want even more time with the game so we can figure out all the special dribble beats and tricks. On the current-gen game we've been loving the occasional 360, as performed on the right stick. At this point, however, we've only been able to flick the ball, so after a few tries we went back to traditional FIFA and Winning Eleven gameplay, which is passing the ball and building an attack.

Off the pitch, only about 140 teams are included, compared to more than 500 on current-generation platforms. Only the top leagues and top divisions made the cut, and EA says it was just too difficult to bring everyone over to the 360. This did allow for a more dynamic and deep player rating system. Players have the traditional attributes, yes, but they now have a long list of traits, such as being able to play out of the corner or having certain dribbling abilities.

In Manager Mode, you earn experience points after each match that can be used to improve player attributes or buy new traits. You could "sell yourself to the devil," as EA put it, and sell a trait like Injury Prone. Basically, you risk injury, but you get some currency to improve other attributes like speed and power. Of course, you could break your leg the next game as well.

This represents a departure from the current Manager mode, and EA calls it more of a "pimp my team mode" than a traditional manager mode. Normally, players have traits and that's it. Now you can customize not only your team but your players, as if they were cars in Forza Motorsport.

ESPNSoccerNet provides a feed of scores from around the world for Xbox Live enabled players. While the integration is nowhere near as deep as in the upcoming NBA Live 07, podcasts will be included for download each month, at least, says EA. Interactive Leagues were not included for online play, nor were online leagues of any kind. But you can play ranked and unranked matches with four players on each box, if that's any consolation. Four players are supported offline, unlike Madden and NCAA Football.

In the booth, Martin Tyler and Clyde Tilsey take over and sound pretty well at this point.

Overall, FIFA 07 is a nice start with the new engine, although the game is still in development. We enjoyed the new ball physics especially, which result in some wild deflections and intense action near the goal, especially during corner kicks. Several times we cheered and jeered in the box until the ball was either cleared or put in the back of the net. Nothing is canned in FIFA 07.

The game is currently slated for a late October release, although it could be pushed into November. We should have more for you from Microsoft's X06 conference in Barcelona the final week of December.

there's always a price to pay. The new game engine is all about AI, animations and graphics...not the amount of leagues and teams implemented. Because of this the gameplay will be much better, believe me! But in any case, those fans of the leagues missing will be dissapointed and who knows, EA are releasing a transfer update come Feburary next year, maybe they'll add in a few extra teams? Hmmm.

In any case, the game looks like it's going to play great and for this, the leagues included won't hurt me...unless there are no international teams...that would be annoying!

No way there are no international teams, they already next-gen-developed them for wc games so why leave them out... Gameplay may be great, It'll take some time before we know for sure what it's like. I can understand moving all tteams to next gen version with required details and stats is extremely time consuming but I won't give them ANY excuses, they have taken millions out of our pockets and surely could have hired few more people to implement what was necessary.

But no, they'll stick with their greedy policy of leaving space to take even more money out of our pockets, and you know what? it works, why should they stop?

They might end up with some live updates and be sure, we're gonna gave to pay for them. They might come up with a CL game with more teams, and we'll pay for that too.

It might be a great or a crap game and most likely I'll give it a go but you can't disagree: EA SUCKS. Hard.

The best comment I heard nowdays was:

To the EA devolopment team: Your fathers should have pulled out.

Hey! But what about the BEST soccer game ever?!?!

If the gameplay is good.. I wont really care.

I've been playing fifa since heck, I can't really remember. Mainly because I could play with lisenced teams, if I wanted the best gameplay I would have stick to pro evo, which I also play regularely.

If fifa is not gonna have the teams it used to have but a better-but-still-not-pes gameplay, what's their selling arguement? What...? The graphics? lol

The biggest reason I'm pissed off is that I'm one of the idiots that are probably gonna buy both when they come out for 360, unless fifa gets delayed enough and pes 6 is up to my expectations.

i dont have to worry fifa comes in october, pro evo comes in january february here in the states, so it will get spaced out.

If the ball is completely free like they claim in that preview, then it can't be that similar to other fifas.

Also I usually only play with the european leagues so thats why it doesnt bother me that much.

I hope it at least feels a little different. I need a decent footy game for my 360 until the next gen PES. Here's hoping(yet again) that Fifa 07 finally delivers a solid experience.

How much have we all payed for that 'hoping this time...' ? Personally, I've bought fifa 06 ps2, Fifa road to world CRAP and Fifa wc 2006 just in one year. Main reason ofcourse being that I had no alternative in 360 since I play football 90% of my time consumed in the console.

And I've heard the 'we've been working on the new game for over 2 years' again, for the previous 360 games I bought. Why the heck am I being such an old lady I really don't know, probably because I once again had such high expectation for this game and most likely it'll be proven false.

Those ball physics that EA is bringing this year, is the key. Gameplay will be totally different.

What a disapointment. How long will we have to wait before they get back to 27 leagues from 20 different countries? I'm thinking 2010.

i didnt think the wc game was that bad on 360.. they are going to show gameplay at X06 thats when is making the debut.. so thats when the first gameplay movies come out... I probably buy it anyway, since i have 3 months between fifa and pes to come out.

As long as the game is an improvement overall and moving in the right direction, who really cares?

What else do 360 owners have to look forward to? PES6/WE:PES2007? Basically an exact copy with very slightly improved graphics of a game that came out as WE10 back in April. For us in North America, we'd have to wait until Spring 2008 for any truly "new" Konami title for the 360 so a dedicated next-gen title for the 360 is an awesome prospect.

Every review I've read so far has said FIFA 07 is an improvement, even on the current gen consoles, and basically that's all I'm looking for: a continual improvement year to year. WE10 (i.e. PES6) was more of a bug fix to WE9/PES5 than a real improvement so at least this year again, EA has caught up some ground.

I know I'm looking forward to this a lot more than the re-release of WE10 in it's PES6 and WE:PES2007 disguise. I already know exactly what I'm getting there with nothing new except a licensed Man Utd team.

Roll on FIFA 07 for the 360 - I can't wait!

hey man! For real!! FIFA 07 on 360 is gonna look and play football.

End of! Might not be as in-depth as PES gameplay with 'press this button here, tap twice and do this for this and that for that', but hey it's getting closer!! And next-gen FIFA 07 doesn't just get closer to PES, first of all it;

*destroys it in graphics
*Is fully licensed
*will most likely sport enjoyable and addictive gameplay! And for once it will be realistic!

even if PES6 plays better, if FIFA 07 offers the all-round package with everything, then that's all I want. Not one or the other, but all of it!

I enjoy your guys enthusiasm and really hope this game will deliver, but so far from what I've seen/read, 2 things that are dampening my spirits are:

1. The IGN preview that states "apart from the ball physics and player movement it basically plays the same as the previous Fifas

2. From the onthespot vid the ball inflight looks exactly like FIFA WC and there is no leg extension on Ronaldinho when he kicks it

I might be overeacting...I really hope the upcoming gameplay vids will prove me wrong.....

EDIT: BTW here is a new hands on from gamespot:

well i hear the official ps2 mag has gave current gen a 9/10, and they WORSHIP PES over here in the UK.

As for the nextgen playing the same as current-gen, GOOD! FIFA 07 CG on ps2 demo (played @ HMV) is great! Much improved. Now take that, improve it emensely, totally new physics, animations, great graphics! All I can say is it should be great!

I know there's only 156 teams (EA protag Admin confirmed), but hey......i don't care if it's fun and realistic.

I know only having 156 teams sucks, but think about it they had to make all the stadiums besides the ones they will use from WC 06, plus put in all the teams with correct kits and players, etc. I'm sure they just didn't have time to do 500+ teams this year. I'm sure most will be in next year. Plus, if they did just rush to get all the teams in alot of the same people would complain because they didn't spend enough time on teams and they messed up on players and kits or whatever. So, although I think it sucks too, I'm gonna give them the benefit of the doubt on this one. Also, I wonder if the 156 includes national teams. If so, is there only 6-7 leagues in the game. I'm guessing English, Spanish, Italian, French, German, Dutch, Portuguese? That doesn't leave many national teams.
