CESAR: "THE NUMBER 31 SHIRT BECAUSE..."
Friday, 03 February 2006 14:48:05

APPIANO GENTILE - Part two of Rodrigues Aparecido Cesar's presentation news conference:

Cesar, why did you choose the number 31 shirt?
"It's very simple: after a year and a half, talks with Inter came to a conclusion on 31 January. Also, I'm 31 years old." (Y)

Perhaps we haven't seen the real Cesar in these last two years because of a few physical problems. What can we expect from your new experience?
"I have had many personal and physical problems that blocked me a bit. I hope I can work well now, get into top shape as soon as possible and try to do my best with Inter."

Mancini has said that you can be used in several roles. What is your favourite position?
"I just want to get back in form to be at the service of the coach as quickly as possible. I want to do my best to help my new team-mates. The coach will decide my position on the pitch."

Which would you prefer to win out of the championship and the Champions League?
"I'd like to win as much as possible. It's always nice to win and it's never enough. We must be focused and try to win every match. You can go far with concentration, positive thinking and a united squad."

What do you remember of your experience at Lazio?
"I have been given a very good welcome at Inter and I am with those same team-mates who welcomed me at the start of my Roman experience. Their help and advice has helped me improve and get this far. I want to thank Lazio, all my team-mates and the fans who always supported me on and off the pitch."

How long do you think you need to be ready for Roberto Mancini?
"I'm working. As I have already said, I think I will be ready for the coach in about two weeks' time. But the important thing is to be in top condition so I can be of use to the team."

MILAN - An early goal from Julio Cruz gave Inter a 1-0 victory over Chievo in Sunday's Serie A Week 23 match at the Meazza. The gap at the top is still eight points ahead of next Sunday evening's 'derby d'Italia', as leaders Juventus beat Udinese by the same score in Turin.

Kily González crashed a shot over after a pass from Adriano in the fourth minute as the Nerazzurri attacked Chievo from the outset.

Three minutes later Julio Cruz broke the deadlock with his eighth Serie A goal this season. Luis Figo 's curling free kick came back off the left post, El Jardinero stole in, controlled and lashed past Fontana.

The ex-Inter keeper made saves from an Adriano header and a Dejan Stankovic volley as the Nerazzurri continued to offer more coming forward than their opponents in the first half.

Inter continued to dominate despite a spirited start to the second half by Chievo, and went close to a second goal on 72 minutes when a potent free kick by Adriano smacked the underside of the bar.

Three minutes from time substitute Esteban Cambiasso had a tap-in ruled out for offside after Fontana failed to hold a Stankovic shot from the distance.

Inter visit Fiorentina on Wednesday in the last midweek round of the season before next weekend's showdown with Juventus.

*whew* Inter got 3 points in this match. Very pleased. :)

Next week, a decisive match against the leaders, Juve. Either we can cut off into 5 points or we'll be screwed up.

Inter hot on Henry’s heels

Inter are considering a sensational move to sign Arsenal striker Thierry Henry, according to reports in Italy.

Henry has said that he wants to stay at Highbury but has yet to sign the new deal that would make him the highest paid player in the club’s history.

With Arsenal’s Premiership campaign continuing to lack conviction, speculation continues to associate the Frenchman with a move to a club better placed to win the one honour that still eludes Henry – the Champions League.

Barcelona have already publicly stated their interest in signing the former Juventus man, but now it appears that Inter have thrown their hat into the ring.

Having failed to buy another striker in the January transfer window, it seems the Nerazzurri are keeping their powder dry for a major summer move.

Inter, bankrolled by Massimo Moratti’s millions, are one of the few clubs who would be able to compete with Barça in the transfer market.

Moratti, who has already signed Maxwell and Maicon for next season, is also determined to lure Michael Ballack to the San Siro.

Few would ignore the title-winning credentials of a side including the Germany captain, Henry, Luis Figo and Adriano.

It'll be a hard one tomorrow match. I'm afraid Inter could get a draw...

Martins' returning to our squad should give us more boost in the crucial match against Juve.

FIORENTINA BEAT INTER 2-1

FLORENCE - Inter's 21-match unbeaten run came to an end at the Artemio Franchi as Fiorentina sent the Nerazzurri crashing to a 2-0 defeat which sees the gap at the top of the Serie A table increase to nine points as Juventus drew 1-1 with Parma in Turin.

A fast-paced first half saw Inter produce more chances on goal but the Viola took a 10th-minute lead through ex-Nerazzurri midfielder Cristian Brocchi, who latched on to a headed clearance from a corner then volleyed into the bottom right corner from 20 yards.

It was the same story in the second half as Fiorentina doubled against the run of play, with substitute Jimenez sliding home a Fiore assist with his first touch after coming on for Bojinov.

Roberto Mancini threw on Alvaro Recoba for Julio Cruz in an attempt to reduce the arrears and the Uruguayan obliged six minutes from time with a trademark curling free kick from the right which went in off the far post.

In a frantic finale Inter pushed for an equaliser but Fiorentina held out for their twelfth win in fourteen home matches.

Hah, I doubt that would happen.

But Oba Martins has done some scouting and has led Inter to the possible signing of a new defender (H)

Inter ‘make’ Taiwo bid

Inter have made an offer for Marseille defender Taye Taiwo, according to whispers in Italy.

As reported by Football Italia recently, Taiwo caught the eye with a series of excellent performances for Nigeria at the African Cup of Nations, including a powerful free-kick which gave his side a late 1-0 win over Ghana.

Inter striker and fellow Nigeria international Obafemi Martins was so impressed by the 20-year-old full-back that he bought him immediately to the attention of Nerazzurri patron Massimo Moratti.

“When the African Cup of Nations finishes I want to take him to Milan to introduce him to President Moratti,” said Martins two weeks ago.

A fortnight on and, with the Super Eagles having been knocked out of the competition at the semi-final stage by the Ivory Coast, it seems that Moratti has made his move.

Internazionale are reported to have tabled an offer of £4m to the French side for the young African, whom Marseille snapped up for a mere £85,000 last year.
