Interesting theory regarding official patch

My download attempt history is as follows:-

  1. Repeatedly tried to download, took all of 1 second and nothing was different.
  2. Altered the command line for the update program (it thought fifa was in a directory /fifa20~2) changed it to /fifa2002 and it still did the same thing
  3. Removed the -cdline blablabla bit of the command line, and it sort of worked (told me it would take 20 hours)
  4. Realised that my fifa game is in a directory /fifa 2002 and not /fifa2002 (space in it) so thought about changing this...
  5. ...but then realised what it had done when I aborted and didn't want the game to stop working, so I copied the whole game to /fifa2002 giving me 2 copies on my system (useful if the update wipes off my changed files.
  6. It is now going to take 2 hours and I think this is about right.
    [/list=1]

So my theory, finally, is that EA have a copy of the whole game on it's update server, when they change files in this, the update program scans your computer and recognises this is different to your files and replaces them. By removing the -cdline bit, you bypass the security checks (don't hold me to this) and so when the directory was not where I have fifa, it started downloading the whole game (hence 20 hours on a 56K modem).

Assuming all of this is correct, you could get hold of the ea update files from any EA game and using this, download the whole game free from ea (and any other game you like), get a nocd crack from somewhere and play for free.

    What do you think??

P.S. Just had another thought, if this theory as to how the update program works is correct, the update would support resumable download as any files downloaded already would be found when your version is compared with EA's version.

so this theory is correct then joe??

Meaning that if I replaced the FIFA 2002 in the update line to say f1 2002, I could download that full game (If I had 20 hours of internet time to use, or a fast connection)???

Nope, it's not resumable!! After 2 hours of downloading, NTL cut me off due to the terms of free internet with 10 minutes left!!! I reconnected hoping for a 10 minute download, but it was back to it's original 2 hours.

Actually, I think it is somewhat resumable.

I am downloading each language version of the game to get the different audio files (thanks to BolzerMike for this great idea) for FifaFX. The first time I dowloaded the whole game - about 600 MB. The next times I simply deleted the "SPC" folder from the "Audio" folder and retreived a different language version. Now the download is cut dramatically, becuase it only has to download the one missing "SPC" folder, and not the whole thing. Too bad the SPC folder is about 225 MB!!

Phil - I wonder if the directory you're downloading to contained the first 2 hours of the files or not? I noticed that the "Castenet" folder was the only folder in the directory until the download was done, then the normal game files popped in. There must be some sort of converter that runs at the end of the dowload. If you already have some of the files, put them in the directory.

BTW, I played a game with German commentary last night - it was great! Now I only have to learn German.....and French.....and Italian.....and Spanish.....LOL.

Well, Phil the Leeds fan , your theory is good, but i think I woundn't do this because I can buy pirate one with a very cheap price.......If I like.
However, my FIFA2002 is original....The patch can't work make me angry!

 It's there any method to solve the problem?

The 40 dollar question is, after you guys got the "new" version...
are any of the bugs fixed?

Sure hope someone will post the different audio files somewhere for us all to have.

does it work

does it work??? coz then i wanna d/l NHL 2002!!

if it does work, where do i change the line from FIFA 2002 to NHL 2002?

Don't know if it works, don't even know if the patch works yet as it is still downloading after my previous attemp (mentioned above). But I would assume that to get NHL2002 you would change the following (don't hold me to this):-

The original command line (for me):-

D:\Program Files\EACOM\Update\update.exe" -id FIFA2002 -url "http://trans.ea.com/games/EA_Sports/FIFA_2002/en" -dir "D:\Games\FIFA20~2" -cdpath "E:" -checkandupdate -indexrequired

Change to:-

"D:\Program Files\EACOM\Update\update.exe" -id NHL2002 -url "http://trans.ea.com/games/EA_Sports/NHL_2002/en" -dir "D:\Games\NHL2002"

JUST A GUESS, DON'T ACTUALLY KNOW WHETHER IT WORKS!!!

May be we can try for those who have FIFA2001 but not FIFA2002, download the free FIFA2002 by changing the command line.......since it have the same update programme!!!!
Who want to try?

you are forgetting one thing, I though I made it clear in the 1st post in this thread, even if you can download the game, you will be in the same state as you would be if you installed it from a mates CD!! It would ask for a CD when you try to start the game. You would have to find a no-cd patch.

So whats the point in downloading it if you know someone with the official CD??
