Pirlo is a great player. He's a bit slow for me and has defensive flaws. He always played behind the strikers before Ancelotti put him in a defensive role in midfield. Never the less, he'll be in the Italian national team.
Maybe nobody knows them but watch out for Enzo Maresca and Stephen Appiah in the comming years. They may not have the offensive talent as Pirlo but they have the total package. They both scored 9 goals last year in the serie A and they played a defensive position.

Viera is the best DM in the world He doesnt score as many goals (4 last season) as Pirlo but he sets up so many with his run and great passing.
I think Pirlo has the ability to play any position on the field... except GK and maybe defense 
he used to be more of an attacking player, like a playmaker and sometimes even a forward, but he just started playing DM last season, so some day he can be better than Vieira once he gets used to the position more... but who needs Pirlo as DM when you have a guy like Gattuso? 
even though Gattuso usually plays on the right side, which is a mistake, IMO

Yeh mostly because there are way more Manu and Real Madrid supporters than there are other teams thats why if we had a poll on here for defensive midfielders and Viera won it would show how good he really is
Pirlo isn't all that great. He'll end up playing Rui Costa's role when Rui leaves. He's a good distributor, but he gets mauled when he has to play against tougher opponents. He's alot like Xavi, Guti, and the like, who play along side a tough man(Motta, Makelele and Gattuso) so their given the freedom to show their creativity.
Davids and Baraja are the best, because they are complete. Technical ability, their excellent, they can do what most can't. Alot of Roma fans(Who go to the games) don't particularly think that Emerson, Lima, Dacourt, are anything to cheer about. Viera should return to Serie A.
