(the pic sucks, but i hope it will be enough to explain)
see that big isle on the right? we call it Britian. it involves England, Wales, Scotland. the northern part of the isle on the left is called Northern Ireland. Britian + Northern Ireland = United Kingdom. everything that's "under" this northern part is called Republic of Ireland, and it's indepedent state. you understand me now?

That's not 100% correct.

Britain = England, Scotland and Wales
UK = England, Scotland, Wales and N. Ireland

Why are England, Scotland, Wales and N Ireland independant in football anyways?

No, at one time they had a joint team with Mexico. That's how Gav has a mexican passport.

I dont see whats so hard to understand.

England, Scotland and Wales are all seperate countries, so why shouldn't they have seperate football teams.

Is a tiny bit like saying, why have france spain portugal etc when you could just have Europe.

Don't try and give me a Geography lesson son.

The United Kingdom (UK) is the nation state consisting of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The UK is a nation you little ****e.

However, Scotland, Wales and N. Ireland have their own national teams as they are countries in their own right but they are politically governed by Westminster.

Well.. they have separate teams on footie because FIFA recognizes England, Scotland, Wales and NI as separate federations... the international olympic comitee however does not... i'm not sure whether they have separate national olympic comitees but I'm thinking they don't... also, the first international match was between England and Scotland, while I'm guessing the UK competed as a single team in the first olympics...
The UN recognizes UK as a single member too

Scotland has its own parliament for devolved issues.

The Scottish Parliament was reconstituted as a body which deals with matters which have been devolved to it by the UK Parliament!

Basically it is constrained very tightly by Westminster and can therefore not govern Scotland fully.

There are several areas of national policy, which are reserved to Westminster, and the Scottish Parliament has no power over. Foreign and Defence policy are debated and legislated at Westminster, as are employment, social security and fiscal policy, as these policies affect the United Kingdom as a whole. Also economic decisions including the nationalisation or privatisation of national utilities are taken at Westminster. As Scotland is still an integral part of the United Kingdom, the national policies listed above are beyond the jurisdiction of the Scottish Parliament.

Don't think Roy Keane, Shay Given, Robbie Keane, Damian Duff or Kevin Kilbane would get in that team ... They are Irish!
P.S.
I did a wee bit of searching on the web and it seems we have seperate national teams because Britain was instrumental in founding International Football.
The first ever international match was between Scotland and England in 1872 in Glasgow. ( 0-0 score. )
It also seems that the Fifa vice-president always has to be from one of the home nations. The current vice-president is David Will from Scotland.
