Is PC Gaming Dead Or Dying For ...

Joe average , people with low end or mid range PC's ? Unless you have a top of the range PC and with the next 6 to 10 months when Crytek's Crysis game come out a "Dx10 Card" to play it in all its glory. Just now I think you could just get away with calling my PC Mid Range, P4 2Ghz , 80Gb HD , 1Gb DDR, GF6600GT.

Yet even the latest Dx9 games when I let the PC or game scan the PC to set the default for these games its nearly all Lows and a couple of mediums, FIFA07 which I have but not for long, looks terrible on my PC and runs about the same, even on 800x600 MED setting I get Frame Rate problems , stuttering screen and players now and then suddenly running about like Keystone cops or a speeded up Benny Hill...

Bottom line doesn't make for enjoyable gaming! And with the intro of Dx10 games the PCs Next Gen games, unless we spend over £1200 for a new PC these games will be outwith our reach...

Heh well its dead or dying for those who can't afford it. Not the cheapest hobby in the world, thats for sure. However PC gaming isn't dying nor will it as long as computers are plentiful. People often like to make these claims but they never come true. DX10 is a major change in the api which is why it isn't compatible with DX9. It's a good change though from what I'm reading, way more flexible and efficient. Nevertheless, if you want in on the ground floor (first DX10 cards) you're going to be paying a big premium. I'm gonna wait it out for awhile until the 2nd or even 3rd generation of DX10 cards are out. By then they'll have the bugs worked out, more supported games will be out, and the cards will be cheaper.

And hey, you can always just buy Crysis and play it a year later when you've got the gear to do it justice. (6)

'Is pc gaming dead or dying for'

You have two options, (unless your bloody loaded) buy the latest console's which is far cheaper, or buy/upgrade a pc which is usually dearer.

At the moment, for me it has to be the latter.

I would rather pay over a grand to update or buy a new pc than pay a couple of hundred quid to buy the xbox 360.

My opinion might change when the ps3 is released, but I prefer pc gaming to console gaming, even though it costs more money .......

And, no, pc gaming will never be dead.

MightyTic, it's good to see you're being modest you think your spec is mid range :)

You think its towards low end ? With some of the demos Ive tried to run and games like Tiger Woods 07 , where if I go to all medium settings on graphics never mind high, I get frame rate stutter and the swing of the club his either in 2 parts or worse.

Yeah, I would say it's low range in my opinion.

You sure the antialiasing and anisotropic filtering is turned off in your nvidia control panel. :)

rado907: there's no way you were playing FEAR at max settings with your setup even at 10x7, course you might have never played that game

The 6600GT was a really great card during its time. Best bang for buck. If you're looking for a relatively cheap upgrade go with a 7600GT or X1800 GTO and a low-end Core 2 Duo but you'll need a new mobo and RAM too. Still, you could pull it off for under $800 or $900 CAD. You'd be fine for a year with that setup assuming you want to play new demanding games right when they come out. As Rado mentioned, one of the best ways to prolong a gaming rig is to have a smaller display so you don't have to play a high-res. I mean if you've got a Dell 24" Widescreen well thats a pretty nice monitor but if you game a lot you're going to be upgrading every two months trying to play stuff at 1920x1200.

Me, I've still got a Sony 17" CRT I paid an ass-load for way back in like '96 I think and the damn thing just won't die on me. I'd like to have more desktop space but I'd have to upgrade my setup to play games at a natural higher res on some new LCD.

Another factor is that some kinds of games just play better on PC's. First person shooters and real-time strategy games come to mind. Anything that depends on a mouse I guess.

I think your graphics card is probably letting your system down. Recently i bought a new pc which includes the following:
Intel pentium 3.4 ghz cpu duel core
2 gig ram
7900 gtx graphics card.
I have only had it for a few months and it cost around £1300, and you know what, allready it's outdated.
When i bought the machine i never even thought about dx10 or vista. To be honest over the years i have spent an absured amount of money trying to keep up with technology.
But technology is moving to fast, well where the pc is concerned. Man i remember playing games on my c64 and my atari and basically enjoying them more than i am now.
Maybe i am getting to old i don't know, anyways i am going to play on my 360 now.

I think PC gaming is far from death. With 360 common platform for developping, i think the futur of PC is good :)

Supreme Commander. hmmmmm hmmmmmm ?
GTR2. hmmmm hmmmmm ?

Like one of the other poster , I am going to wait until at least the 2nd phase of Dx10 card before I go out and get a new PC .. This there even a good time to get one? for within 6 months ATI or Nvida have released the next greatest thing and games devs are building games for it , while your Dx10 card will run it there is alway something new that only THAT card will let you see ...

1st I have to save , then get it .... so that is another reason for the delay but if I had the money , Id still wait at least until Vista and Dx10 cards are here ...

I suppose truth be told I only play about 4 games all the time...

I think it's always been the case that only the top end PC's will run games in all their graphical glory. That's something as a PC gamer you're just gonna have to accept I'm afraid. This ****'s not cheap and it never has been, no doubt it never will be either.

That's not to say buying the most up to date console is particularly cheap. How much was the 360 again when it first came out? Anybody remember how much the Saturn was when that dropped?!

Similarities?!
