Yes, another bad pun, **** off.
Pretty much all my saves have been me taking over Chelsea or a National Team and winning titles with ease. But this time I decided to do something different, the notorious Journeyman Game. The idea is that you load a bunch of leagues, start yourself with the lowest reputation possible and without a job, and go from to job, climbing the fooballing pyramid until reaching the top.
So, with that in mind, I loaded a lot of leagues from Europe. (I didn't trust my PC's ability to process a lot of leagues, so I had to restrict myself, and so I decided to stay within Europe. Couldn't load all the leagues, or even all the leagues I wanted, but still loaded a bunch. By the way, I'm playing FM2010, because I decided to skip FM2011.
Anyway, from the start I applied for every job available and got two offers. Cacereño in the Spanish Second Division B (Group 2) and Worcester in the Blue Square South. Worcester City offered the higher wage budget at 4,500 comapred to Cacereño's 4000, although the Spanish club also offered a small transfer budget, which Worcester didn't. In the end I decided to go with the club nicknamed 'City' (... great name) by it's fans: WORCESTER CITY!
The club was expected to battle relegation, and the squad was crap. Even for the BSS, they barely had a competent player for any one position, so I knew I had to scour the free-transfer list for better players. Looking at the squad and the available players, I decided to play a narrow formation, because I couldn't find decent wide players, had few wide players in general, and my 'best' players were MCs and STs, so for the first time since FM2006, I went with a 3-striker formation.
Formation:
The roles change depending on who plays and such, but it's generally a counter-attacking/attacking (depending on opposition) narrow formation, with either a Stopper - Cover - Stopper partnership at the back, or all 3 on Defend. In midfield I generally play a simple DM and 3 CM's, although depending on whose playing I sometimes play a Deep-lying playmaker. At the front is where I'm yet to settle on what to do. I have 2 (relatively) pacey strikers, 3 target-men and Biancone, who I've played as a poacher, target-man, trequartista and deep-lying forward. Best formation so far has been Poacher - Biancone - Poacher (although I've combined them all at some point), and right now he's playing as a DLF. If anyone has any ideas on making a good trident, I'm all ears.
Transfers:
All I have to say is it's hell dealing the market at this level with hidden abilities on. You pretty much have to go through the free players list one by one and scout them individually, multiple times. My basic strategy has been to search for players with relatively balanced stats and look for older players who could play for a year or two. Ian Cox is 38 for example, and chances are he'll be at the club longer than I will. Made a mistake thinking 5 months counted a short-loan, so I wasted one long-term loan, but Davis is a good player and he's been helpful. Since he's arrived I've acquired more midfielders, and I've got his departure covered.
All in all I'm pleased with the squad I've assembled, there's good youth and experienced players as well.
Squad:
Fixtures:
We've done better than I expected, losing only 4 times. Once because I overestimated our abilities and went with an attacking mentality and got punished for it. Once we dominated and had more chances, but still lost, and we got out-played once. The other loss was in the FA Cup, where we made it to the First Round but drew Huddersfield and even though we hung-on for a while, and even equalised, they were simply too good.
The squad has been gelling more lately, aided by the arrival of Lloyd Kammeron, who has been great in set-pieces. We've been getting better results and I think promotion is very well within our grasp.
Table:
If we clinch promotion I might stay on for another year, but I'm looking to move to another country eventually and hopefully get some CL exposure.
