Kluivert set for Newcastle

Newcastle are expected to unveil Patrick Kluivert as their latest signing at a 1530 BST news conference.

The 28-year-old jetted into Tyneside on Wednesday morning to complete his switch from Barcelona.

He is set to join on a year-long loan deal with a view to a permanent move at the end of the new season.

"It's a great club with great players and I hope I can fit in. It's an honour to play for such a passionate audience," said Kluivert.

The Dutch international's agent, Paul Foortse, had earlier said that his client was 95% certain of joining the club.

Chairman Freddy Shepherd returned from the club's Far East tour on Tuesday and entered negotiations with Foortse.

"We're hopeful because there is a willingness from both parties. Both parties want to have an agreement, so we're optimistic," said Foortse.

Newcastle have been chasing a new striker this summer as they look for a long-term replacement for Alan Shearer, who is retiring at the end of this season.

Southampton's James Beattie has also been linked with a move to St James' Park.

He has won 79 caps for Holland and was part of the Dutch squad at Euro 2004 but did not make it onto the pitch during the tournament, with Ruud van Nistelrooy winning the battle to start as the lone striker.

I thought Ameobi was doing well towards the end of the season. Now with kluivert they should be even stronger. EPL is gonna be more competetive this year I think

True Kluivert has had a pretty bad season by his standards. Push out of the Barcelona team, and sidelined during the whole Euro2004 campaign.

So it might a bit of a gamble on Newcastle's and Kluivert's part. Nevertheless he is or can be a great talent... and if he's in the right frame of mind can accomplish a lot for Newcastle.
I'm not rejoincing too soon though... we'll see how things go at 3:30.

What about bellamy?

Newcastle should put down that senility stricken old fart before they start gunning legitimately for the league title. Their situation very much reminds me of the Joe Paterno dilemma up in Penn State

Bellamy is way 2 injury prone to rely on for a whole season. I beleive Newcastle were smart to do a loan deal so if he is a flop they can get rid of him. Ameobi has been improving a lot but I believe they think that 1 more year under the flanks will help him and next year with Shearer gone will be his year

I don't know why people see it as a good signing for NUFC... Kluivert's been awful the past season.

He hardly ever played.

He has signed a three-year contract with Newcastle, severing his ties from Barcelona permanently.

"It's a great club with great players and I hope I can fit in," said the Dutch international.

He added: "It's an honour to play for such a passionate audience."

Kluivert, will wear the number 11 shirt vacated by Gary Speed, becomes the club's second summer signing

Last year he sucked. Plus he got injured and when he came back was fat and out of shape.

He's obviously talented but i think he's got no motivation, maybe going to a new team and different league he'll get back to his old form i mean he's only 28 its not like he's old yet.

Newcastle have nothing to lose and everything to gain with this signing. He cost us nothing and could be exactly the spark we needed to get something positive from this season.

Kluivert didn't sucked the last year, he sucked the last 3 years. It's a good player though.

He was the first striker for Rijkaard.. but when he got injured Barça won a match and then 17 in a row (H)

He needed a change because he loved the night parties of Barcelona.

Thanks Newcastle. :clapwap:
