Laptop Battery

I have an Acer Aspire 5000 series, and my original battery had gone to ****s (where I'd unplug the AC adapter and it would immediately give me a "critical battery" warning)... so I bought a new battery, basically the same make and everything, put it in, was working fine, had 2+ hours of battery life which is what I expected. then it drained and died so I charged it again, but the indicator always said 100% so I never knew when it was dying or whatnot. I let it charge for around 30 minutes, then took the battery out so the laptop was running solely on AC power, then put the battery back in and it said 73% so I figured I solved the 100% issue and the laptop could now read the battery's power levels. problem. as soon as I unplugged the AC adapter, the laptop shuts down. like completely. no warning, nothing. so now I'm stuck with a battery that isn't even working/isn't being read. anyone know what the problem could be? I highly doubt the battery's simply died completely. but I'm starting to fear it since it's the only logical explanation.
