Last great FIFA game...

Ok, I haven't played PES or WE7 or any other football game besides FIFA but looking at the comments on this site, it looks like the nails on FIFA's coffin are slowly being hammered in...

... and I agree.

I've been MASSIVELY disappointed by FIFA after RTWC 98 with the only bright light in the dark being the wonderful FIFA 2002 and WC 2002. The last two games have been utter CRAP. I played FIFA 2003 for like a week on a borrowed X-Box and if it wasn't for the fact that it was fun playing with friends, I would not have bothered. The game was a mess, passes and shots would register like 2 seconds after pressing the button, the players - which in RL are supposed to turn on a dime - would keep running like 5 meters after I told them to move in another direction, stealing the ball almost seemed like an automatic process rather than the hard, physical hits in the past. In short the game was reduced to running up or down the field hoping the other player would mess up with the controls worse than you would and hopefully hitting the shoot button before the goalie would lunge at you.

And FIFA 2004 was even worse, at least in 2003 some shots went IN ;)

I still enjoy World Cup 2002, it's wonderfully fun but here another of EA's talents is apparent: their utter lack of care for giving their games replay value. No goddamn randomizing feature???? gimme a f***ing break, every time I play the game I have to play against the SAME teams in the SAME groups. It gets boring. No custom team/player editing? Great way to constantly remind me why the hell ISRAEL is in the game and not the Netherlands...

...and the worse part... I CAN'T DELETE MY OWN SAVES???????????????

Sorry EA, but I just about had it. It is apparent that you don't give a damn about making your games better, just finding suckers to buy them. I'm glad Konami is finally entering the PC market, despite the fact I haven't played any of their games, I'm hoping to get my hands on them soon, even if they don't have any licensed players.

So, when did the FIFA series die out? I'd say it's been going downhill since '99 as both 2000 and 2001 were crap. The series was briskly given a boost with 2002 and WC 2002 but the last two have been utterly atrocious and it looks like 2005 will be no better.

R.I.P. FIFA, it was good to have known you ;)

the main difference is their name..

minor difference is ....different regions they secured different set of licenses...

also... since the release date differ by a few months... the latter version got some bugs fixed as well...

BYE BYE FIFA.

I agree Master Zen, constant downhill IMO since Fifa 97.

Why are people still buying FIFA? It SUCKS. Everything is ****e about it. Graphics, gameplay and longevity

FIFA 98 was good but since the game went from 16-bit to 3D, that's the only highlight.

FIFA 97 was shite, yet, FIFA 2003 and 2004 are worse!

FIFA 98 was awsome, best football game of its time IMO. I thought FIFA 2002 was good initially but eventually got boring. World Cup 2002 is still fun for me whenever I play it, I love that game but I hate the lack of options and teams.

I liked the 2 last WC games and FIFA 98. I enjoyed FIFA 99 a little bit but the pyshics and the gameplay were kinda mediocre already.

The last GREAT FIFA game, IMHO, was, sadly, RTWC 98.

While I agree that each of the WC games ought to be considered, I cannot agree that they were great games. They were intriguing, no doubt, but that was US bringing our anticipation for the possibility of what they COULD HAVE BEEN to the table, not EA bringing any radical upping of their game to the code.

That being said, WC 98 was a better overall experience than WC 2002.

But the last GREAT FIFA game has to be measured by taking an evolutionary gameplay setp, replay value, features, suspension of disbelief, AI, human-to-human play...

The last time all of those things came together at all for EA was RTWC 98. Everything since has been a cheapening of that experience, almost like the marketing folks at EA said "HEY! Don't give them everything at once!!! Give them some things one time, and others things at other times...!"

Fifa WC 2002 is awesome and i still play it till this day although lack of options kill it. Fifa 03 was the greatest example of OK and I still played it a lot because that's the only soccer game on the cube (no good PC at that time I'm afraid). Fifa 2002 was cool in multiplayer, but I had it for the PS1 and lost it in a week. Fifa 98 was solid gold exept for a few rankings. :rockman:
