Learning how to play Guitar!

Johnny_Big

Starting XI
I started to learn guitar in November due to some personal/social problems. I needed something to put me up again. Now, I can't stop playing. In almost 3 months, I think I play usually well right now. I can play 2/3 in full, but they are quite simple (Mazzy Star - Into Dust, Oasis - Wonderwall)...

The trick is practice. I usually have 1 hour for the guitar for the day. Training new songs, improving old ones, it's always exciting.

Acoustic is harder to get started, but great for you to dry the fingers and win some. The starting frets are bigger than an electric one. But I started with the acoustic and usually I play between my acoustic and my mate's electric. But I recommend acoustic to start.

Guitar Hero isn't the same thing as real guitar. But it sure improves loads of stuff. Reflexes, rhythm, speed to switch between chords, etc.

And yeah, I'm learning alone. Not bad so far. I can do the F (but still without crossing the ****i** fret (H))

For the beginner it's always the last chord from A to G that you learn because you need to cross it.

You don't have to play it as a bar chord, I usually play F with the finger placements of T34211. (I started playing it like that after seeing Ray LaMontagne play it like that)

A "Damien Rice F" is Tx3210, it's how he plays most of his bar chords. You get really interesting sounds from these kind of "open bar chords" - the minor would be T34100.

1. Is playing Guitar Hero (the PS3/XBOX video game) similar to playing a real guitar?

2. Does playing Guitar Hero help a person to learn to play a real guitar, without actually learning to play by using a real guitar?

No, and no :D

Well I suppose it might help dexterity, but playing guitar "properly" requires a lot more accuracy.

I was just being awkward and pointing out that you don't necessarily have to use a bar chord to play an F!

Ok so then is it just a party game/entertainment type thing? What advantage does it offer over playing a real guitar?

I mean the one area where it can help you is finger strength and possibly coordination but when it comes down to it Guitar Hero is NOTHING like a real guitar.

....I learned how to play the intros (well not 100% but most) of Smoke on the Water, Nothing Else Matters (I have some trouble with the pull-off notes) and Thunderstruck (this one is soooooo much fun, I almost want to buy and electric right now)...

I was just browsing through this thread and, I haven't heard those songs or anything, but that was fast!!!! And without an instructor that too....you're a fast learner.

I'm trying to improve my relative and absolute pitch at the moment. It's pretty dull. I don't even know if I have a decent relative pitch or an awful one, I don't understand when it becomes useful.

What the hell.
I do play on hard. Extreme is way out of my reach.

And sometimes there are impossible sections on hard.

Ever tried Knights of Cydonia on Hard? Even on medium it's a b****. Not even Star Power saves me.
