very new to this kit thing so please excuse...but what program are you using and can you change the main colour of the template and thus keep all the proper shading......thanks

eg. can I take the white template and turn it into a blue colour before starting the details...does this make sense?

create a new layer over the texture, set the layer style to "multiply" and fill all the layer with the color you want :rockman:
