Milan confirm interest in Brazilians
Monday, 24 November 2003
Milan chief Ariedo Braida has confirmed that the club are interested in Brazilian stars Luis Fabiano and Alex.
The Samba pair are two of the most sought after players in their country and Milan have been monitoring the two for some time.
Sao Paulo star Fabiano (pictured) has also been linked with a move to Manchester United, but the English champions look set to turn down the chance of signing him - letting Milan have a clear path to him.
Alex, who plays for Santos, is an elegant central defender who - like Fabiano - has attracted a great deal of attention in recent months.
Braida - Milan's director general - was in Brazil only last week as he took the chance to eye a number of talents.
Milan have always looked to South America for potential new signings and their most recent capture - Kaka - has been a revelation since his move to Italy from Sao Paulo earlier this year.
Braida has now returned to Italy after his trip and highlighted Alex and Fabiano as their two prime targets.
"We are keeping a very close eye on two Brazilians," he told Controcampo.
"The first is Sao Paulo striker Luis Fabiano and the other is Alex, a central defender who plays for Santos.
"Fabiano is a tall target man, similar in style to Christian Vieri, but I want to see a bit more of him first."
Milan seem to be in the market for a new striker, with Rivaldo set to leave and question marks remaining over Dane Jon Dahl Tomasson.
Stuttgart star Kevin Kuranyi and Fernando Torres of Atletico Madrid have also been linked, and Braida confirmed he liked both.
"The German is very fashionable at the moment," he said.
"As for Torres, he is too expensive.
"The past has also shown that Spaniards don't tend to do that well away from their own country."
