Foxborough, Mass. (April 1, 2004) - The New England Revolution today announced today a stunning transfer window deadline signing as they have added Luis “El Lobo” Fangoso to their roster in anticipation of the season opener this Saturday. Fangoso, who will wear the coveted number 10 jersey for New England, can play any of ten outfield positions but is most comfortable bossing a match from the middle of the park.
El Lobo’s pedigree is as rare as his resume is impressive. Although listed as having played seven games for Argentina as a youth international during the era of Daniel Passarella (none of them full internationals) Fangoso has taken advantage of the new football naturalization regulations to become a top-choice striker for Gibraltar. Also known as the "Rock" of Gibraltar (Luis is quite a keen fan of rock music), Fangoso has 99 caps.
Nicknamed El Lobo because of his ability to play in any weather conditions - snow, ice, FieldTurf, rain, and, as his surname would suggest, mud - Fangoso impressed the technical staff in Foxborough with a resume tape (grainy as it was) that also displayed a dazzling array of backheels, flicks, serves and bends. That was enough to convince the team to take a chance.
"He's a pro's pro, a proven pro, and a player's player," said Revolution head coach Steve Nicol. "We’ll see whether he can do the business once we’ve seen him play in person, it’s as simple as that."
"Steve has my full backing on this signing," said Craig Tornberg, General Manager of the Revolution, "Although attacking midfield clearly was not an area of immediate need, any time you get a chance to sign an international it's a chance the coach has to take."
"Pete Mariner is famous in my country and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to play for him," said Fangoso as he faced reporters at a news conference upon his arrival in the U.S. at Manchester (NH) Airport. "It's important for me to get games so I can show I belong back in the Gibraltar setup. My style of play means I can play it on the deck and in the sky, east-west, north-south whathaveyou, so I'm sure I'll fit in with the lads."
Fangoso’s story is one of persistence in the face of anonymity. After a short spell in the Argentine lower leagues, El Lobo went to Paraguay to play for Ciudad del Este. This move drew attention from international operatives, but few with any connection to international football. Still, Fangoso knew in his heart that the Europe was where he was meant to play and that led him to Guernsey to begin his continental club career in earnest with Range Rovers.
After winning the New Young Player of the Year award in the guerncom Premier League two years running, Fangoso received enough good notices to be called into the Gibraltar side after it was discovered his great-grandfather, an Argentine merchant marine, had descendents living on the peninsula. And it is for Gibraltar, that El Lobo made his name. Wonder goals in victories over Rhodes, Shetland and Ynis Môn meant that the Fangoso name would be carved name in stone alongside those of the all-time greats.
Fangoso will not count against the Revs senior roster, nor will he be designated as a transitional or developmental player. As per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed. He is expected to start for the Revolution on Saturday.
