Manchester Senior Cup Final
Manchester City 3
Manchester United 2
City of Manchester Stadium

United's quest to win five trophies at reserve team level ended in dramatic fashion at the home of Manchester City.

Stephen Ireland and Ishmel Miller scored for the Blues in the 80th and 86th minutes respectively to snatch the Senior Cup from Ricky Sbragia's side, who'd looked set to retain the trophy after a positive first-half performance.

The Reds led 2-1 at the break thanks to a goal in first-half injury time by David Bellion, who cut in from the right before beating Nicky Weaver with a cracking left-foot shot. The City goalkeeper had previously been dummied by Giuseppe Rossi, diving before the United youngster struck the ball home from the spot.

Rossi's penalty, scored in the 36th minute, was awarded for a foul on Chris Eagles. It came just four minutes after Ian Bennett had given City the lead by converting Lee Croft's cross.

In a similar tale to the first team on Saturday, United's reserves had plenty of chances to put the tie to bed in the first 45. But again they were denied by some fine goalkeeping, although Weaver saved his very best until the very last minute of the match.

Pushed into attack, Reds defender Gerard Pique produced what seemed to be a match-saving effort until the City stopper palmed it over the bar with one hand. It was the last, decisive moment of this see-saw Senior Cup Final.

United gamble on casino

MANCHESTER United are applying to the Government for a licence to build a casino on land close to Old Trafford.

Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell has already been forced to massively scale down plans to allow a number of casinos to be built throughout the United Kingdom, initially due to the scale of opposition to her proposals, then in an effort to squeeze legislation through before last week's General Election.

It is widely assumed Blackpool will be handed the one licence currently on offer, with other other hopeful areas left to wait and see whether Jowell attempts to revisit her original plans during the new session of Parliament.

Manchester City have previously outlined their own plans for a casino at Eastlands but now United are putting forward a forceful case, citing a massive regeneration of Salford Quays as the worthiness of their argument.

Together with leading hotel, entertainment and gaming company Las Vegas Sands Corp, United hope to build a luxury five-star hotel, restaurants, health club, sports bar and a regional casino on the Trafford Park side of the ground.

Coupled with the successful Lowry Centre and Imperial War Museum North, the plans will create the largest cultural village outside central London and would also include a new Metrolink station, improved bus routes and additional parking spaces on the site.

Should their plans meet with approval, it is hoped the Red Devils could regenerate a wider area around the stadium, raising the potential for more recreation and entertainment-based businesses for use by the local community.

"The club are delighted to be part of this exciting project, working with such a leading organisation as Las Vegas Sands and with Trafford Council," said United commercial director Andy Anson.

"If selected, it will provide first class entertainment and accommodation on one of the most famous sporting sites in the world and create jobs and generate income for the local economy.

"There is a lot of work still to be done and any plans will of course consider the social issues associated with gambling and we will take expert advice on putting an agreed plan in place to deal with those matters comprehensively."

Trafford Council's executive has agreed in principle to support the joint proposal from Manchester United plc and Las Vegas Sands and has made an initial bid for a licence for a regional-scale casino in Trafford.

I heard David Jones, skipper of the reserve team could be on the bench. Somehow, this player must have shown some qualities to be able to catch Fergie's eyes

I just got the impression that after all the finals and important high tempo matches of the last few weeks, the boys in the reserves were running on fumes towards the end. City however were really up for it - and so was their crowd. I guess them getting one over on United at any level makes their day!

They gave everything they could though, and thats all we can ask - Maybe the first team would do well to watch them now and again!

MUTV has just put Fletcher in the provisional 11 V Chelski tonight - Why does he continue with this? Fletcher is nowhere near as good as Ronaldo, In fact I really don't see why they keep raving about him. In my opinion he is a squad player at best - at least untill he physically improves regarding strength - He has a good engine, but he's too easily knocked off the ball.

Ronaldo isn't any better. He puts himself than the team first. He could do it simple but he became complacent.

I'm assuming you mean over Fletcher.

I would stick with Ronaldo as when he does learn when to distribute and when to dribble, he will be an awesome asset to our team. I just think Ronaldo is putting himself under his own pressure to be the absolute star of every game, he just needs to relax and play the game. IMO.

The Red Devil
Fair play to Chelsea, they are worthy champions. But something pissed me off tonight and it wasn't the defeat, it was the players and Ferguson's tactics. First of all, the players just didn't give a toss apart from maybe Rooney and Ronaldo seemed to give a toss and Ruud was isolated for most of the match because of Ferguson and Quieroz's boring 4-5-1 tactical farce. According to Ferguson before the match on Sky Sports he said Giggs was not injured, however, he was not included because "Saha needed time", oh what aload of crap Fergie, I wonder what goes on in the man's head at times, I really do.

Now, onto the tactics - 4-5-1 is a cancer and it is killing us. What was wrong with 4-4-2? this club built its history on 4-4-2, using the wings, and today we had no widph whatsoever, stop playing Rooney on the left and play him with Ruud ffs. Most managers in the world would dream to have Rooney and Ruud in the same team, yet Ferguson is wasting our best player - yes, our best player - on the left in big games, whilst he should be played as a striker, jesus ******* christ just play him as a striker, its not rocket science.

Great post here, if only Gill could grow a set of balls and tell Ferguson to play 4-4-2 or else. No one is bigger than this club. As much as I love Roy Keane, I hope he retires at the end of the season, he is one of the reasons why we play this disgraceful 4-5-1 system (Fergie said we use it to accomodate him) and it has pissed off many players (according to very good sources), not only that, but it didn't even work at all tonight, Keane got shat on by Makelele whereas the Keane of 6 years ago would've destroyed this Chelsea midfield on his own. Maybe if Keane went to Celtic or retired we could then go back to playing the entertaining football that Manchester United are (or once was) famous for, 4-4-2. It could be worse (i.e 1980's), so i'll be happy with 3rd/4th next season if things don't change this summer.

But if this disgraceful 4-5-1 farce continues and Ferguson no longer has the marbles to wield the axe on certain players like he did in the late 80's (Whiteside, Paul McGrath) and in the mid 90's (Robbo, Ince, Kanchelskis, Sharpe, Hughes) then perhaps it is time to go, and if he does decide to call it a day he can take that wanker Carlos Quieroz with him. And no, this is not a knee-jerk reaction. All great things come to an end and I will never forget Ferguson for what he has done to this club, turning it from being a club about to be flogged for £20m and transforming it into a club worth almost £1bn. But the writing has been on the wall for years and Fergie has taken this club backwards since 2001, wasting millions of the SUPPORTERS HARD-EARNED MONEY on agent fee's, players and huge wages that many of the players do not deserve right now. And now ST prices are going up next season, because of Ferguson taking this club backwards. I have a feeling next season will be make-or-break for Fergie.

Have a look at these posts, they point out many of the things wrong with the team and the club.

My only hopes for next season is that we can go back to 4-4-2 (won't happen if Keane is still here) and that Rossi, Jones, N'Galula, Pique all make the step up next season and make a big impact at the club. But then again, the last time someone was given the chance and really looked like a Manchester United player after a couple of games, he was rewarded by being dumped back in the reserves, and that was Jonathan Spector. And I wish Ferguson would stop going on how we are "a young team", because we are not, in fact we are an aging team that is not going to get any younger.

The staunch Fergie defenders can rubbish this post all they want, but these are facts. And for me, watching the Reds play 4-5-1 and not being able to break down any team that plays with 9 men behind the ball, that is not Manchester United, what we're being fed now is just heartbreaking to watch at times.

Manchester United certainly do not have a devine right to win and there are more important things than winning trophies - and that is the history of the club, and a big part of our history has revolved around entertaining, exciting, attacking, 4-4-2 football, and for me that is the way forward. I would take entertaining and attacking football over trophies anyday. That said, 3rd place is will do fine with me next season.

Yeah, I read that Rant article earlier today, completely agree with it. Changes need to be made no matter how radical they may be, this can't continue.
