Mancini confirms Tottenham talks

Lazio are confident coach Roberto Mancini will still be in charge at the Stadio Olimpico next season, despite his admission that talks with Tottenham have taken place.

Mancini, 39, is contracted with the Roman club until June 2008 but has been in contact with Tottenham, who are currently under the guidance of acting-manager David Pleat until the end of the season.

'I have no information regarding this (meeting),' Lazio president Ugo Longo told reporters.

'Mancini has not only received requests by Tottenham but by other clubs.

'We are aware of it and it makes us very proud because we have a very talented coach.

'Although the future is in the hands of God, we know Mancini and Lazio have every intention in continuing their work relationship.'

Despite enduring 18 months of financial hardship, Lazio were boosted by last month's agreement by shareholders to release funds.

Having sold Serbia & Montenegro midfielder Dejan Stankovic to rivals Inter Milan at the weekend, the Eternal City outfit hope to recruit new playing talent in the summer.

Eight players, including captain Giuseppe Favalli, end their contracts with Lazio in June, with a further eight having just a further year left in Rome.

Longo said: 'As many people are aware many of our players end their contracts this summer and we have a new project to re-structure the team. Mancini is the right person to conduct this project and he is convinced of our proposal.'

Mancini, talking to Eurosport, had earlier admitted there had been contact with the London club.

'We talked just to get to know each other,' said the former Sampdoria striker. 'Just to test the water, that type of thing. I have a long contract with Lazio, but you never know.

'I have always said that I would like to train an English club as the football there is so enjoyable and the players have a great spirit and work together so you can always do something there.

'It might sound strange, but Spurs are an important club.'

Mancini has also been linked with Inter Milan with the club's current coach Alberto Zaccheroni seen by many only as a stop-gap replacement for the sacked Hector Cuper.

Mancini denies talks.

Lazio boss Roberto Mancini has denied reports claiming he has spoken to Tottenham about the managerial position at White Hart Lane.
Mancini has insisted that quotes attributed to him were fabricated, and reaffirmed his commitment to Lazio.

The former Italian international was alleged to have told British Eurosport that he had held preliminary talks with Spurs but, speaking after his side's Coppa Italia victory over Milan on Thursday night, claimed there was no substance to the story.

"I have not said anything. These are completely invented words, that never left by my mouth," Mancini stormed.

"I will be staying at Lazio next season."

Speaking on his side's 2-1 first-leg win at San Siro, Mancini was quick to play down suggestions that his troops had all but settled the two-legged tie.

"I don't think we have already joined the final," he continued.

"We are definitely closer to it, but against a team like Milan anything can happen."

He wont leave Italy to go coach a crap club like Spurs. He is the one coach that can make Inter into a good side IMO. I think he'll go to them after this year perhaps

Inter did always express their wanting to get Mancini as the manager, but I think now that Morrati has gone it might be a little different.
