Manhunt

From IGN
Manhunt is going to cause a stir, without a doubt. The game's extremely violent nature shouldn't be seen by young kids. Which is why it's rated M, for mature. If you're a worried parent, you should read this review and study perhaps some others and make an educated decision. You wouldn't let your kids watch an R-rated film, right? Right. Of course not. So, use your brains and do a little research instead of over-reacting. Manhunt is a violent videogame, but the only thing that's new about this violence is in the way it's presented. OK, sermon over.
When it comes down to it, the grisly cutscenes are just icing on the cake of a superbly honed stealth and tactical action game. Manhunt is a solid, deep experience for seasoned gamers pining for a hardcore, challenging game this fall. The level of difficulty evolves gradually from basic stealth fundamentals to tactical guerrilla warfare with melee weapons and a variety of guns with nary a hitch in continuity. It's hard, but it's a great challenge. One thing I LOVE about its steep learning curve is that it's never, ever cheap. If you die, it's because you messed up.

Aside from the harsh death scenes, the thing that makes Manhunt stand out as unique is its sound. The audio features here are incredible, from the USB headset addition to the brilliant responsiveness of the AI, to the unmatched level of hilarious and creative voice-overs and the disturbing sonic sounds of the musical score.

In the end, Manhunt is a highly polished strategy game of hide-and-seek, kill-or-be-killed gameplay. It's narrow in focus, but deep in its specialty. There is not much of a story nor are the levels terribly varied, but without a doubt, Manhunt is (with the exception of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty) unsurpassed in its unique brand of stealth and tactical combat. If you're up for a serious challenge and have a tough stomach, go get it. But don't make the mistake that this is an all-out run-and-gun action game. That would be a $50 mistake.

8.5 Presentation
The content of the cutscenes may be grisly and harsh, but they're handled with care, skill and expertise.

8.0 Graphics
The video cams, static, old VCR tape effects and the like give this game a unique style. Excellent mo-cap and great gang character models.

9.5 Sound
The best audio on the PS2 this year: Excellent character voices and disturbing music. The sound-based audio AI work is peerless.

8.7 Gameplay
This is the definition of stripped down stealth. The old school, try-and-die gameplay is an acquired taste but the level of difficulty and skill-based gameplay is undeniably good.

8.0 Lasting Appeal
You'll spend 20-30 hours playing this game the first time through in Fetish. There's lots of replay value here with those and four bonus levels.

8.5 OVERALL:
(out of 10 / not an average)

It sounds good. You can use the headset to make noise, so that the people hear you and then you kill them (H)

'Manhunt' Video Game Banned

New Zealand has banned a video game because of excessive violence and cruelty.

"Manhunt" features a death-row inmate whose execution is faked and who becomes part of a snuff film.

He is told he will become a free man if he kills everyone he encounters, by the most grisly means necessary.

Chief Censor Bill Hastings says the game rewards extreme violence.

He says Manhunt is filled with realistic sounds and images of brutal bloodshed.

Bill Hastings says he has banned the video to send the message the game crosses a line.

Just import it if you really want it...

Anyway, I know I won't be getting this game. Excessive violence and the subject matter doesn't really go down well with me.

This game sounds really disturbing

HAHAHAHA, thank god for freedom of speech in the land of the free and home of the brave. I probably will never play this game, but some of the things sound cool, like if you make noise into the headset, people will hear you, which is especially realistic when someone sneaks up on you and gives you a suprise; if you scream or let out an "oh ****!" you're pretty much ****ed.

I would get this game if I had money:p
Even though it sounds a bit sick a disturbing you have to take it with a pinch of salt. This is obviously a game aimed and the adult market and as long as retailers don't sell it to under 18's I don't really see the problem with it. Remember GTA caused quite a stir...

nz has about 0.1% of the world games market, i hardly think itd make a difference

I am really surprised by this. When it comes to censorship we are usually one of the most liberal places around, especially with regard to movies - we have shown heaps that have been banned in Australia and the like. I mean, I doubt I would have ever played it, as it is not my sort of game, but I don't believe in a link between game violence and real life violence.
