Marcello Lippi is going to be Italy's next coach

The post like it was posted at UEFA's Euro 2004 official site:

"Lippi named as Italy coach
The Italian Football Federation has announced that Marcello Lippi will replace Giovanni Trapattoni as coach when the veteran's contract expires on 15 July.

Two-year contract
Although Italy were eliminated at the first hurdle at UEFA EURO 2004™ - becoming the first team to be knocked out with five points - the 65-year-old did not want to stand down with the end of his contract so close. Trapattoni will be succeeded by Lippi the day after his contract ends, with the former Juventus FC coach signing a two-year deal which takes him to the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

'Right moment'
Lippi revealed in April that he would retire from football at the end of the 2003/04 season, a campaign in which Juventus failed to win a trophy. He said at the time: "It is the right moment for me to step aside. I will not sign for any other club. The club tried to convince me to stay but I refused. They even offered me the job of technical director, but I believe it is time for a wonderful story to end."

Success at Juve
Lippi enjoyed a wonderful first spell in charge of Juventus between 1994 and 1999, winning the Scudetto three times as well as the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup, the European/South American Cup and the Coppa Italia. An unsuccessful period with FC Internazionale followed before a return to Turin in 2001. Two more league titles were won and Juve reached another Champions League final, losing to AC Milan."

What should've italy's federation do for your opinion?:
1. Should've give the job to another coach?
2. Shoud've let Trapattoni stay at the job?
3. Should've give the job to Lippi?
Please write your comment about the move

Senior Squad
New Porto coach Luigi Del Neri has claimed he could have succeeded Giovanni Trapattoni as Italian boss, not Marcello Lippi.
Del Neri, who left Chievo Verona to take over the UEFA Champions League winners earlier this month, has revealed he was on the Azzurri's wish-list.

The bespectacled tactician says he held discussions regarding replacing Trapattoni but a decision on the position was not made.

He admits that if the Italian Football Federation had confirmed they were going to replace Trapattoni after Euro 2004, he could be in the hot seat.

Del Neri has backed the appointment of Lippi as coach but was contemplating what might have been had the timescale been different.

"I could be in Marcello's place," Del Neri told La Stampa.

"We talked about this a few months ago and, if a change on the bench after Euro 2004 would have been decided in that period, I'd probably be there now.

"Anyway, I think that Lippi could be the right person."

Meanwhile, Lippi insists he will not make wholesale changes to the squad despite the team's failure to reach the Euro 2004 knockout phase.

The former Juventus chief is likely to be subjected to many calls for an overhaul of the squad following the early exit, particularly a clamour for the inclusion of Parma duo Alberto Gilardino and Daniele Bonera.

But, while hinting at the injection of some youth into his squad, Lippi has no plans to drastically alter the shape of the Azzurri set-up.

"I don't want any revolutions," said Lippi. "The current group must be kept with the insertion of a few young players.

"Then, we will also see what the league presents us with and we will continue with this policy through to the 2006 World Cup.

"Our football isn't overestimated. Although it hasn't achieved big results, this group isn't going to change completely because it is made up of big players."

Lippi also confirmed he sees no reason to axe Francesco Totti and Christian Vieri from the national team squad following their antics in Portugal.

Totti was banned after spitting at Denmark's Christian Poulsen while Vieri launched a fierce broadside at the Italian media.

"In my eyes they have a fantastic image," continued Lippi. "It won't be an episode that will ruin it."
