Microsoft's Newest Operating system..Windows VISTA

Incase you didn't know (me until around a month ago) Microsoft will be releasing a new version of the Windows operating system...called Windows Vista....very very soon.

The local computer store was advertising several systems that come with a Free upgrade to Windows VISTA! They listed the features of this OS under the heading “Advantages of Windows Vista”. Now, the price is expected to be around US$250.00 if I remember correctly…far too much for me, so I’ve decided to “critique the features”. The features are in BOLD. BTW, I consider myself to have an intermediate (at best) knowledge of computers...Joe Consumer you could say.

WINDOWS NEWEST OPERATING SYSTEM

Most secure Windows ever with Windows Defender and Windows Firewall: OK….the key to this sentence is the word “WINDOWS”. I downloaded Windows Defender and used it’s anti-spyware scan…got nothing….YAY!!!!!! 5 seconds after closing it, I used the Adaware FREE version spyware scan and found 47 items!!!! Goodbye to that!!!! And Windows Firewall????? Not when Zone Alarm is out there…..no sir!! Useless for me cause I wouldn’t be using either product!

Quickly find what you need with Instant Search and Internet Explorer 7: Eh. If you’ve got copious amounts of RAM and want to be still greedier in terms of performance (specifically speed) of other “search” features, then yeah……..but, I think that right now, the speed of searching for stuff is fast enough. For me, if I want a faster Internet connection, I would buy a new Modem (also expensive). As for this feature……….worthless!

Elegant Windows Aero Desktop Experience with Windows Flip 3D navigation: This is a SWEET looking User Interface, I must say. A lot of people might buy VISTA primarily for this! I would…..if it were cheaper! I can only wish they’d release a “VISTA-esque” theme for XP, cause man I need a change of scenery!

Best choice for laptops with enhanced Windows Mobility Center and Tablet PC support: Don’t have a laptop and never had one so can’t say anything about this….you’d have to figure that it’s useless for a desktop user (me) though!

Collaborate and share documents with Windows Meeting Space: What are they trying to do???? Replace MSN? I think this is primarily for Businesses as a means of saving money on travel…this would be great if several systems had it installed…otherwise, not really! Let’s call it ………….useless!

Experience photos and entertainment in your living room with Windows Media Center: Well, you know the advantages and disadvantages of Windows MCE….not a necessity though, so I’d say it doesn’t make too much of an improvement…especially if you’re not focused on “photos and entertainment” clogging up your computer! You will probably differ from me on this though……

Help protect against hardware failure with advanced backup features: Only time will tell how advanced ‘advanced’ really is! On the surface, it sounds like a semi-plus!

Enjoy Windows Media Center on TVs throughout your home with XBOX 360 and other devices: Don’t play those kinds of games so don’t have those systems…some of you younger ones will enjoy this though. Let’s give them the benefit of the doubt and call this a semi-plus….considering that gaming systems are so popular these days!

Business Networking and Remote Desktop for easier connectivity: Remote Desktop, for me atleast, has been useless.....with security such a big issue these days, the "other" computer required would not be one that I would trust to run Remote Desktop..they should've removed this feature...worthless...a huge minus!

Better protect your data against loss or theft with Windows BITLOCKER DRIVE ENCRIPTION: Like the backup features, only time will tell what “better” truly delivers. Again, let’s give them the benefit of the doubt here and call it a semi-plus.

Now there is one feature that was not listed, but crucial in my opinion:

ReadyBoost: Another major attraction for me.....VISTA will allow you stick a ***compatible*** flash drive (memory stick) into the computer's USB drive and a feature called ReadyBoost will ask you if you want to use that added memory to speed up your computer...I think this is great, but to see a significant improvement you'd probably need one GB of RAM. If you have 2 GB of RAM (consider yourself lucky and me very jealous of you), it won't be like saying you stuck in a 4 GB flash drive so you now have more than 6 GB of RAM....not so easy there tiger! Also, not all flash drives are compatible with ReadyBoost. Nonetheless, a big plus for me...

So lets add em up (assuming I can add): 6 useless features, 3.5 useful features (0.5 useful feature = what I have called semi-plus).

Alright Microsoft, now chop that price in half!!!!!!

Oh by the way, Windows Vista will be released on the same day as MS Office 2007.

VISTA vs XP

In a nut shell.....Vista is supposed to be more secure than XP, which is good thing, with a lot more eye candy, if that is important to you, but you will need more main memory that XP did not need. Vista also addresses more memory than that of XP, so you can have lots more if necessary...I think it supports 16 GB RAM while XP only suports 4 GB RAM, although I am not 100% sure. XP was not written for dual core processors, but Vista was, so it should work better, but I'm not too much up on that. Another difference is that, on laptops, Vista really eats up the battery. If you need to maximize battery time you'll want Vista Basic with NO AERO interface, or stick with XP.

Vista also comes with DirectX 10, and you cannot have this with XP, which handles the newer video card ( DirectX10 cards ) out now, and coming out later.

DirectX10 is exclusive to Windows Vista and is not slated to be supported by any other platform. This will ensure that the next-gen games will be available on Windows Vista before any other platform. The new display driver or graphics model in Windows Vista, WDDM (Windows Display Driver Model), is the main reason for DirectX10's exclusivity to the operating system.

Well, the offical release date for Windows Vista (I should have mentioned this earlier) is January 31. Funny how Vista is getting all the hype and virtually no-one gives two cents worth about good ol' MS Office, which is scheduled to have its 2007 version released ON THE SAME DAY!

And, apparently, the version of Windows Defender that runs with VISTA would be more secure than the version that runs with the other operating systems. The Vista version offers additional performance and security enhancements including the ability to scan only files that have changed, to run under a security-enhanced account, and to scan files when you run them. Windows Defender will also allow you to scan files as you download them if you use Internet Explorer 7. Realistically though, it's not that big of an improvement...just the ability to scan files when you run them and the 'scan files when you download them (requires IE 7)' would be considered more secure by me.

Combined with Windows LiveONE Care (great user interface), it appears that Microsoft is making a serious attempt to get into the anti-virus/anti-spyware business....let's face it all prior attempts were useless. Its 30 day trial version gives all the features although I'm guessing that it TOO would require Vista to run at full efficiency.

tbh i'm not too keen on Vista, from what i've heard Microsoft have gone completely overboard in terms of having completely legal etc. systems.

Ouch!!!!

VISTA'S CONTENT PROTECTION specification could very well constitute the longest suicide note in history, claims a new and detailed report from the University of Auckland in New Zealand.

"Peter Gutmann's report describes the pernicious DRM built into Vista and required by MS for approval of hardware and drivers," said INQ reader Brad Steffler, MD, who brought the report to our attention. "As a physician who uses PCs for image review before I perform surgery, this situation is intolerable. It is also intolerable for me as a medical school professor as I will have to switch to a MAC or a Linux PC. These draconian dicta just might kill the PC as we know it."

But this isn't just a typical anti-Microsoft rant. Gutmann's report runs to 6,000 words and contains hardly any FSF-style juvenile invective.

"Windows Vista includes an extensive reworking of core OS elements in order to provide content protection for so-called "premium content", typically HD data from Blu-Ray and HD-DVD sources. Providing this protection incurs considerable costs in terms of system performance, system stability, technical support overhead, and hardware and software cost," says Gutmann on his homepage.

"These issues affect not only users of Vista but the entire PC industry, since the effects of the protection measures extend to cover all hardware and software that will ever come into contact with Vista, even if it's not used directly with Vista (for example hardware in a Macintosh computer or on a Linux server). This document analyses the cost involved in Vista's content protection, and the collateral damage that this incurs throughout the computer industry."

He also claims that Vista's content protection will 'have to violate the laws of physics if it is to work'.

I'm not going to comment on the details of the report and its implications but merely suggest that you read it for yourselves and come to your own conclusions. I'd also venture to suggest that Microsoft might want to comment on Gutmann's work.

Furthermore, a punch to the gut:

Well....could this be a slap in the face of VISTA?

Microsoft has just announced that it will extend support for Windows XP Home and Windows XP Media Center Edition to match that associated with the Professional version:

"Mainstream" support will be available through the second Tuesday in April 2009.
"Extended" support (critical security updates) will be available through April 2014.

The point: Windows XP is going to remain a viable operating system for some time.
