Mike Williams' Appeal denied by the NCAA

Williams' appeal denied by NCAA

Southern California wide receiver Mike Williams has had his request to be reinstated denied Thursday by the NCAA.

USC spokeswoman Vicky Hammond said the school had applied to the NCAA for a progress-toward-degree waiver and reinstatement of Williams' eligibility.

The ruling came down shortly before the top-ranked Trojans boarded an airplane for Baltimore. They open their season Saturday night against Virginia Tech at FedEx Field in Landover, Md.

Williams caught 95 passes for 1,314 yards and a school-record 16 touchdowns last season to help the Trojans (12-1) win the national championship.

The 20-year-old Williams, an sure-handed 6-foot-5, 230-pounder, finished eighth in the Heisman Trophy balloting as a sophomore last year.

After a court ruled that Ohio State's Maurice Clarett was eligible to play in the NFL, Williams left USC in the spring, hired an agent and said he was turning pro. That made him ineligible to play for the Trojans.

He was projected as a high draft pick, but on May 24, an appeals court overturned the earlier ruling and upheld the NFL's right to bar players who had been out of high school for less than three years.

Williams has been out of high school less than three years, as has Clarett, who was suspended last season after starring at Ohio State as a freshman.

After the appeals court ruling, Williams severed ties with his agent and began the process of applying to the NCAA for reinstatement.

He returned to USC and took summer classes, seeking to have his academic eligibility also restored.

Earlier this week, USC coach Pete Carroll expressed frustration with the appeals process.

"Even today there are still some holdups in the processing - not on our end," he said Tuesday. "We have done all we can and we still can't get the word as to what is going on. It has been very, very difficult to get Mike back on the playing field.

"It has been extraordinarily frustrating for Mike and his family."

F*ck, I was hoping he'd be allowed back. Well, the Pac-10 should be a lock for SC but I don't know if we'll be able to repeat. We've got some pretty damn good receivers in but Mike Williams would really put the team over. :kader:

Make America Great Again
This is the most classless move the NCAA has ever done. Mike Williams did absolutely nothing wrong, returned all of his endorsement money, and they still don't let him back. The NCAA can suck my balls.

Senior Squad
The NCAA is an absolute joke. They only care about lining their pockets with money from their TV and sponsorship deals, and, as a result, they gave up caring for student-athletes long ago. As far as I'm concerned, Myles Brand can go rot in hell.

NCAA SUCKS

The guy even take his classes and got good grades, returned all the money endorsment gave him and its a nice guy. It official, the ncaa blew it big time. :kader:

Although it wouldn't surprise me if the allow him to play later on the season, because of the amount of pressure they're going to have. :-puke:

The Man From Ohio
I'm really starting to wonder which is the worse sports governing body, FIFA or the NCAA.

EDIT - Just read that article by Jeremy Bloom, great stuff. Somebody needs to sue the NCAA's ass, right now.

Cow-tow to the almighty NFL and NCAA....these vindictive, spiteful assholes just want to make an example of this dude, man. One whole year of nothingness? I understand the NFL rule of a player having to be three years out of high school in order to be eligible for the draft, but why is the NCAA being ruthless??

Now I really feel guilty about biffing his hot girlfriend earlier this summer......poor dude......:kader:

Get those legs and arms insured and workout like hell over the next year and hope that the draft class of 2005 isn't as deep as this year's was
