MLS Expansion Draft [R]

Glorious

Starting XI
Hmmm i think Toronto will not bomb out in their first season like Chivas or RSL. I think they will pick up a few good signings.

It's odd- See Chivas USA was pretty much working with an already competitive American market of players. (They had 12 other teams to compete with <i think its 12> so they couldnt get the best americans out there)

But Toronto FC is pretty much working with an (comparatively) untouched Canadian market. (Instead of getting the "left over" Canadians from most leagues, the ones comming are pretty much the best that there is).

IE: Imagine if this was the canadian league, and the americans got 1 team and got to pick any of these players:

- Donovan
- Mathis
- Reyna
etc etc

Besides the 1-2 Canadians playing in too big clubs in Europe (for Toronto FC I mean< like Tottenham, Fulham etc) the rest are pretty much fair game (I heard of a couple of great underrated players in Norway who are pretty much on their way here right now, also with the best players in the USL, any player from the upcoming youth team and a large choice from the MLS itself.)

It wont be the same IMO (and New Zealand Knights........they did really badly but there are many differences bw NZ and Canada
1) Canada is better than New Zealand (Not trying to be rude, just pointing it out) (Rank: 71- 136) ((((I know NZ advanced lately, but I still remember 11 years ago when Uruguay beat New Zealand 9-0 , I had never in my life seen such a bad group of players <Like any 2nd division Uruguay team would have thrashed them> ............and that was Uruguay in their "worst moment in history" (with players averaging 35-40 years of age). <<<Though I know they advanced, Im looking forward to seeing the NZ team in the Club World Cup this winter>>>

-But Point is: I think with the good (if limited) Talent Canada has (+ the 4 europeans coming and a few quality americans), TFC is in a completely different situation than Chvias USA or the Knights.

2) Toronto has huge interest and the market to make this a successful team. Already this team is being treated with respect from all over the media and excitement has never been higher.
<<Correct me if Im wrong though..........Im not sure if the city from NZ Knights is a huge football city, so excuse my ignorance If it is.>>

. Paulo Nagamura (Los Angeles Galaxy)
2. Danny O'Rourke (New York Red Bulls)
3. Jose Cancela (New England Revolution)
4. Adrian Serioux (Houston Dynamo)
5. Nate Jaqua (Chicago Fire)
6. Rod Dyachenko (D.C. United)
7. Jason Kreis (Real Salt Lake)
8. Tim Regan (Chivas USA)
9. Ritchie Kotschau (Columbus Crew)
10. Will Hesmer (Kansas City Wizards)

These are Toronto's new players. Im so happy that Cancela is here (he was mediocre at best in his Uruguayan league days, but I heard he really has been playing great in the Revs for the last few years. Really happy we signed him)

You're right, Pepe has improved since he joined the Revs. However, he wasn't getting many chances to play over the last year or so. That's why he was left unprotected. Our loss is your gain, and I wish him the best of luck in TDot.

Here are my thoughts on these players:

Serioux - athletic, technically and tactically sound player

Cancela - crafty midfielder who didn't really fit into Steve Nicol's system but could blossom at Toronto FC, depending on what style of play the team adopts

Jaqua - if Toronto FC can convince him to stay in MLS and sign him (for a reasonable salary - $100k-130k) this would turn out to be a good pick

Regan - great pick; very low salary yet a solid defender; Bob Bradley got more out of him at Chivas USA than anyone expected, let's see if he can keep it up

Nagamura - decent defensive midfielder with good skill on the ball

Kotschau - one of the better left backs in MLS, although that doesn't say much

Kreis - past his prime and not really worth the price tag, but could bring some veteran leadership to the team

O'Rourke - had a painfully mediocre season with Red Bull NY; hasn't lived up to the hype about him coming out of college, but still has time to turn it around; Mo Johnston seems to like him, when he was at NY he traded Serioux to get him (which, in retrospect, was a boneheaded move)

Hesmer - never seen him play, but should be a good back-up goalkeeper

Some of these players might be used as trade bait to get Canucks like Pat Onstad and Ante Jazic (I think DeRosario is out of reach, sorry guys). Toronto FC doesn't have enough SI and YI spots to keep all of them.

damn, now we don't get Serioux's long ass throws... honestly, his throw-ins are like a keeper's goal kicks :(

anywho, I've never heard of any of the players we picked up besides Serioux (because he's Canadian)... gotta start following the MLS more :)

On the soccer fanatics last week a new Toronto FC player was a guest instead of Mark. I don't remember his name but apparantly he was the first Toronto FC player aquired. He's Canadian.

Horatiu that was Jim Brennan. AM 640 Toronto has a show dedicated to FC Toronto this Saturday at 11am.

TORONTO - On Friday, Major League Soccer held its Expansion Draft for the benefit of Toronto FC as the newest edition to the league.

Immediately following the draft Head Coach Mo Johnston made the following moves.

Canadian Midfielder Adrian Serioux was dealt to Dallas along with a Second Round Draft pick in the 2007 MLS SuperDraft, for Irish Midfielder Ronnie O'Brien.

"Adrian is a very good player, but it's just something we had to do to make our club better" said Johnston. "O'Brien is a fabulous talent and will be a great addition to our squad."

In 5 seasons with Dallas he scored 12 goals, and added 35 assists in 101 regular season games played. The 27 year old was a 3 time MLS All-Star and selected to the MLS Best XI in 2004 and 2005.

New York Red Bull Midfielder Danny O'Rourke, and Kansas City Goalkeeper Will Hesmer were both traded to Columbus in exchange for a partial allocation. An allocation is a fixed sum of money that a club can use to acquire new players.

After discussions with Real Salt Lake, both teams agreed that forward Jason Kreis would return to Salt Lake. Toronto FC received allocation money in return.

Toronto FC is Major League Soccer's 13th team, and begins play in April of 2007 at the new BMO Field at Exhibition Stadium.
