I think with Turkey there is something of over-expectation on the part of the Turkish. When they got so far in 2002 they somehow thought they had arrived as a footballing superpower without noticing that they hadn't had to beat a European team to reach the Semi-Finals.
The turkish team itself has very talented players.
But we have the same problem everytime we face a weak opponent that just plays defense and just aims for rare counter attacks.
Malta game it way exactly the same, and during the Moldova game it was pathetic.
I understand that the whole point is to gain points but you have to see both of the last 2 games we played. (Malta and Moldova)
Ofcourse we do have certain weaknesses but playing against a team with 6-7players with a defensive mentallity, and trying to score against a team that basically plays 5-4-1 or even 6-3-1 is a little challenging at times.
I mean Greece had trouble against Moldova too, if i am not mistaken they only won 0-1.
Our problem is more than this however, we basically lack disipline, thats why most of the stars of the Turkish football comes from outside Turkey, mostly from Germany , Holland and Belgium.
The turkish player that was raised and trained in Germany and the one in Turkey have basically the same amount of talent, but because of the training advantages(this includes everything) and disipline, these players only focus on their progress in football, and some turn out to be pretty decent players.
Serdar Tasci from Stuttgard and Mesut Ozil from Schalke are the latest examples to this, not to mention Nuri Sahin, i believe he will also be a quality player. (he is currently on loan to Feyenoord from Dortmund)
These Turkish players that was trained and raised in Europe are much more disiplined and hard working, whereas the young prospects that we trained in Turkey are mostly spoiled and wasnt raised and trained as proffesionally as those in Europe, which causes their amazing talents to dissapear in the shadow of the Turkish League.
Winning 4-0 against Greece in Athens proved what this team is actually capable of.
Greece was also a team with a defensive mentality but our players showed they can outrun any challenge that was on their way, only if they actually stay focused and take their opponents extremely seriously.
Malta and Moldova draws are a dissapoinment to my nation.
And there is only one person that is supposed to pay for it, and thats the coach Fatih Terim.
He needs to get the team back on his feet before he was forced to resign.
The game against Greece will a tricky one, after all Greece-Turkey games are always more than just football
