I've been meaning to update this thread but have been too lazy. I went back to my Fm13 five continent challenge (champions leagues) and continued with Independiente. Last I left off I finished the 2028/29 First Stage 2nd to Boca. Warning: Long post.
Here is the table of the Close Stage:
So the last game of the season I had to play a mid-table team and thought I was on my way to the title. I end up drawing and thought that was fine because I would win on goal difference. Turns out Argentina have a head-to-head game for the championship if teams are tied on points and I lose that game 1-0 to Boca in extra time.
-----------------
I've said in the past how I've learned quirky things from experimenting in different leagues and one interesting thing is that the Copa Libertadores starts in February but ends in mid July, which meant my team got no summer break and our first two competitive games in the new season (as shown on the fixture list for the season) were the two legs of the finals. On the way there I had to beat tough two-legged affairs with River in the quarters and Boca in the semis.
Wohoo!
So I accomplish my goal of winning the continental competition in South America, and I did so in my first season with Independiente.
However, I wasn't ready to leave like I have with my previous teams. I was disappointed I didn't win anything in the league and came second to Boca both times. I wanted to achieve that goal and on top of that I also wanted to see the new free agents I signed in action next season.
Here are those free transfers I got, all of them would become crucial parts of the rotation. I also made a big midfield signing with Ortiz... I'll talk about that later.
I got Napoli to sign this guy for 7.5m. Impressive Command of area, Communication and Determination attributes:
I think I mentioned before how Argentina is loaded with good players. I made that huge profit from selling players by getting rid of players I didn't need and replacing them with free transfers.
------------------
To bring you up to date: I finished the Open Stage and got my title, going undefeated. My team had amazing depth where the backup XI could do well against most teams in the league.
Here are the players:
Lots of rotating. Guy with top # of appearances only has 25 because I only played half the season (Open stage title).
-------------------------------
A surprise to me was that the Copa Sudamericana ran opposite from Copa Libretadores, meaning it ran during the first half of the season with the CL running the second half. This meant I had an unexpected opportunity to win another continental competition.
This was the first leg of the finals:
Check out the (predicted) "Key Players" section of the post game. Second leg was 1-0 for us so I win that cup!
The only really difficult leg was the semi against Boca (again). The other somewhat tricky game was against another Argentinian team - Lanus, in the first round. Other then that I had to play South American sides that weren't up to par with my Argentinian team, including the Brazilian team I beat in the finals, Criciuma. I have no idea how they got into the competition considering there are a lot of good Brazilian sides. They are around the 15th-20th best Brazilian side.
They got to the finals by having an easy path, except upsetting heavy favourites Flamengo. PS: Those two legs might be the most lucky 2 game streak I've seen in the game:

Oh, and this happened too:
My team is pretty strong. I've got some players that could play on the Argentinian national team but probably don't because they're not in Europe. And it seems I've made it a habit to defeat English teams in that competition (beat Man U with Sundowns in the past).
-----------
Now onto some of my players.
Top players that did well: (They were starters that performed above expectations)
Star striker who suprisingly doesn't get attention from European clubs. Dominating with his team play and superior (target man) ability:
Reliable CB, fans' player of the year last year, high average without goals scored inflating it:
High-performing, consistent MC. Did well from the get-go in his first season with Independiente, unlike some of his other teammates:
My best winger, very talented for the Argentinian league.
-------------------
Overachieving role players: (These players performed beyond their ability)
Two star Abarca dominating with his height (6' fucking 8"):
Young center mid who has a knack for being in the right place to score goals. In terms of talent was fourth choice MC at the beginning of season (among my 3 MCs) but ended up being choice #1 towards the end, when I realized how good he was.
Originally my back-up DM but had the right attributes to perform really well in his role, including a few games with some crazy passing stats.
-------------------
A somewhat silly move that didn't pan out was that I signed this Paraguayan MC/R for 7m which was unnecessary since I already had a strong team.
He was injured half the time this season and wasn't the star I expected him to be. Ability wise he is the best on the team. He performed ok but didn't shine. Although it's only his first half-year with the team so it's still early. Having "important matches" as a scouting weakness should have been a warning but I had loads of money and wanted to buy someone talented.
