My only real beef with PES/WE gameplay...

I think PES should introduce player runs like in FIFA... it happens to me a lot that i'm holding up the ball with my winger waiting for my full back to advance but he just stands there staring at me.
I KNOW i can use the attacking attitude arrows in the management screen but I don't want my full backs to attack all the time.
for example when i'm playing with Inter, I'd want Zanetti to go forward every now and then and whenever i want him to.. but not all the time.
It would also be useful if you see an opportunity in the middle and want your defensive midfielder (whom you already gave a strict defending role) to advance for that particular attack only.

I think with the addition of this you'll almost have total control over your team.. I already love the team management in PES/WE and how you can position players anywhere you want... plus those little arrows and the strategies.

yes that is the one thing that drives me nuts , players not making runs off you .. as you say turn in midfield to pass out to the wide player and he just stands either just behind you or level never makes a run up the wing or if he does .. he's miles to late.

just one other thing, tackles you stick a foot in and make a good tackle, but the ball shoots off yards away, and usually picked up by the the other team. the ball does seem to hit off player and run yards away. Im still to see a normal pass hit someone and break just near you .. alas it always seems to run 10 to sometimes 20yrds away and not before someone say it a powerful shot I am talking just normal foot in standing tackles.

the aformentioned problem is a classic PES thing. drives one nuts, doesn't it?

one thing i would like to see is a bit more refined dribbling engine. there are not really realistic one on ones in the game. just picture the way Henry does it all the time, dragging the ball along, varying in speed, taking his time before deciding which way to pass, doing stepovers, almost coming to a total halt, then exploding. defenders usually will go backwards trying to tempt him into going either side, trying to shield their space and not jump for the ball right away... in PES they are never going backwards. they just run you down and chase for the ball and are usually way to skilled (and way too fast) in dispossesing you unless you are able to pull the sort of lightspeed 90 or 180 degree moves they do all the time (someone here called it aptly "japstyle").

that's one of the things they attempted in FIFA 04.. the defenders sometimes to tend to be more patient and wait for your next move while you can do fakes/stepovers/move slowly with the ball etc.. but like you said, most of the time once they go for the tackle it's already too late to evade it.. unlike IRL where the attacker (especially of Henry's and Del Piero's calibre) has the advantage if the defender goes for the tackle too early.

i know... in principal i like the way it's done in FIFA 2004. i also like the way the players are animated.. it looks and feels very real, at least in training mode. none of that PES harakiri stuff.

that said, in a (FIFA) game itself it's useless. you can't dribble. the player reactions are all of the sudden sluggish as hell, and even on fast (R1) mode they just seem to run too slow. plus their agility radius is just too large and cumbersome. anyone who has seen Zidane deal with 5 germans on about 3 square meters last saturday knows what i mean.

also, defenders won't even attack you unless you put the ball ahead (R1 or RAS), so theoretically you can walk down the entire field without ever beeing attacked. add the still slightly weird ball physics and the whole thing falls together, even though it has some very good single elements.

just want to add: this is all out in the blue... a fancy, so to say.

i am aware that coding a game like that (even one like FIFA ;-) is a pretty amazing feat and deserves the highest praise and admiration. of course, some things we ask for are just plain unrealistic , unimportant and even nitpicky.

back to playing..

Yeah I used to hate that too...

Here is a tip to get around it... it is not like the Fifa player runs but it's a pretty decent solution...

As you probably know your team can have three strategies (full strategies with formation, player attitude etc.). All strategies can be created in the management menu and be assigned to the buttons L2+[] or L2+/\ or L2+O or L2+X. What I usually do it create a very very VERY attacking formation (all players on the opponents side of the pitch... except your two centre backs if you play with Italy ;) ). Whenever you need to you can activate your new ultra attacking formation in game by pressing the shortcut and your players will run towards their new positions...

When I play with Brazil or Real M I usually create a Roberto C formation where I leave everything unchanged except putting the man himself up next to the opponents corner flag. Whenever I activate this strategy Roberto will launch himself into a run for the flag... (remember the wingback rush from one of the old Fifa versions??). You can also do a strategy where both your wingbacks run for their respective flags...

The only thing you have to remember is to keep an eye on the defence and revert to your normal strategy whenever you lose possession. And by the way... never let your central defenders lose the ball when Roberto and Co. are charging upfield...

Try this and tell me what you think...

yea I thought of that as well and it sounds like the best solution.. but I'd still prefer to do it with a single button, in such situations u need to make the decision and react in a split second ;)

Player runs, yes.. but not neccesarily the way FIFA does it. I hate it when my centre backs start making runs into the opposing box. That's unreal.

its very irritating, i agree. your trying to hold up play waiting for someone to run and they just stand there. grrr
