Definitely. Show the coaches you have determination and you will be picked. Just look at players like (sorry to show my bias) Andy Johnson or Aki Riihilahti. Especially in Aki's case, he's not exactly the most skilled player, but he shows so much heart and determination that he always gets picked for Finland (and Palace). I don't have to tell you about AJ.
Don't stop running in the tryouts. Even if everyone else is walking, jog slowly. Show the coaches that you are only there for one thing: to play, and play hard. You will get picked if you show that you're more committed than the other (presumably more skilled) players.
I know this is a stupid example, but in one of the leagues i referee, it's a Girls U19 indoor division. There are players mostly aged 14-16, with a few 13, 17, and 18. On one of the teams is a 10 year old girl (yes, TEN!). She is definitely not at the same skill level as the other players, but she is scrappy as hell and never stops running. She goes after every ball, even if it seems obvious that she won't win it. She tracks back and plays on both sides of the pitch, pretty much just going after every free ball no matter where it is.
Her team puts her up front as the lone striker now because all they have to do is play a long ball in, and she will win it, no matter where the defender (or defenders) are. Once she learns how to pass more effectively (she tends to get tunnel vision for the goal, which is all well because she gets a lot of shots on goal), she could be a great player.
But my point is, at 10 years old she's playing in a U19 division as her team's lone striker, because she shows 100 times more commitment than everyone else on the field.
So yeah, just show the coaches that you are determined, and you will impress.
