How about an 1280x1024 wallpaper with Zambrotta, Trezeguet or Thuram? Here are the best pics I could find, make it with one of those three. Though I'd preffer a Zambrotta one, one with Thuram would be OK too but if you really want to make it with Trezeguet, it's OK too :p.

and voltaic borusse to answer your question... I duplicated the layer, on the the bottom layer i desaturated(Ctrl + Shift + U) and then gaussian blur, setting - 1-2 pixels. then onthe top layer i used smart blur, i forget the setting but you can play around with it. lastly the top layer blend mode should be overlay, and the bottom normal.
