Definatley nation - no doubt about it. Thats when all the club rivalries count for nothing and the whole county everyone gets behind one set of footballers. And the nation reaches fever pitch - you can see everyone living football. Its a magical experience!

I think the historical context of many international rivalries just add a greater spice to game making them seem as if they were important to the national interest in some way.

For example think of a good ol' Brazil vs Argentina, or Argentina vs Uruguay. Or France vs Germany or Germany vs England. Italy vs Spain. Russia vs Ukraine, Japan vs Korea.......see where I am going? so much more to play for IMO

well.. I am sure the franco dictatorship allowing the germans to test the new weapons on the bombing of a basque city didnt help too much.. the same as making speaking basque forbidden...

From a catalan point of view, I totally agree with you. For this reason you say and or many others.

It's true now there's only the spanish team and it will be very difficult to have national catalan or basque teams playing international competitions in big sports. But who knows... dreaming is still free.

If the spanish team ever wins something I may be happy for some players, but I'm not happy with the reaction it provoques in some media and in some groups of spanish society.

Another point of this discussion would be:

Clubs are paying players and they may not have them to play in some some match because this players have to go to play a silly game somewhere in the world. Is it fair?

In my point of view there are too many international competitions and they should be concentradted in the same periods.

Clubs should have priority over national teams in having a player available for a game as they are paying his salary OR national federations should assume player's salary for that period and the cost of an injury

i agree a lot of the spanish media is completely horrible.. they'll talk about real madrid for 10 mins and spend 2 mins in the rest of the other 19 teams on the liga...
but I am spanish, and I dont have any troubles admitting that.. but I also was born in the basque country so I am also a basque.. and of course the basque sentiment is high.. I mean.. my club only plays players from the area..and we are damn proud of it.. so of course if my club wins I would celebrate it much more.. it would be a big f*ck you in the face of the media who doesnt give us any respect at all, and in the face of teams that all they do is spend money instead of using their youth systems

Heck no! That may be all nice and fine for you Euros, but do you really think South American or African nations can afford to call up their best players if they have to pay their wages? The day clubs have an official say on weather a player can play for their national squad will be the end of any football worth watching. :kader: Clubs will just have to take the risk of one of their players getting injured. Buy only European players if you want his nation's federation to pay his wages or you can always just hire crappy players that will never get a call up.

is fine that national teams take the players... but not for pointless friendlies in the other side of the world for nothing but money.. like when france went to australia.. and brazil to japan, they need to come with a unified schedule
