Need some help with motherboard, RAM, etc

My old PC needs some upgrading (hence use of the term old). Anyway it has an i430FX chipset (triton?) but I have the i430VX manual (apparently, when I last upgraded it some years ago, they gave me the wrong manual...sounds stupid, I know...)

Anyway, I need some help in upgrading my RAM. I can't find the motherboard manual anywhere on the net. I _think_ that the maximum amount of RAM it can take is 128MB. It has 4 72-pin SIMMS slots (I checked this on the motherboard) and uses EDO RAM (currently). The i430VX manual says that that chipset (i.e. i430VX) can use either FPG or EDO ... but as I'm not sure if that will work on the i430FX I guess I'll have to stick to EDO.

So what sorta considerations do I need to...well...consider :)

Do I simply get 4x32MB sticks?

What about RAM speed (the i430VX manual says that the SIMMS should be faster than 70ns)

What other stuff do I need to find out (do I need bus speed and so on?) and how do I find them out?

As you can tell I'm a real newbie at playing around with computers so don't be too harsh when answering.

Also, please answer as soon as possible as I don't have too much time to spare.

Thanks.

yes u will need four 72pin Simms - each 32 mb.

u will also need to increase the L2 cache to 512kb or it will detect only 64 mb ram

My advise - get a new Pc man ! your machine is prehistoric.

Yeah I know the compy is pretty much dead (and buried for that matter)....actually I have a newer one that was bought about a year ago...but I just wanna upgrade the old one a bit anyway.

Thanks for the advice...a couple more questions though.

What sorta prices are we looking at for each 32MB stick and also the cache.

Also, I think I have only 256kb cache, so do I need to buy a 512kb stick or just another 256kb? Any particular considerations wrt the cache as well (speed, etc)?

u need to increase the L2 cache before u can add ram or it wont detect more than 64 mb

u should be looking at 30 or 40 $ at the most....maybe even cheaper.

i doubt u will be able to find any new EDO memory in the market now unless it is 2nd hand.. it doesn't worth upgrading.. trust me.. doesn't make any much differences at all....

But do I need to change the cache altogether (i.e. buy 512kb) or can I just add on another 256 kb?

It would make a ton of a difference imo as the pc currently has 8mb
:)

Anyway, thanks for the advice guys!
