Senior Squad
Italian World Cup squad named Monday 15 May, 2006
---------------------------------------------------------------

There were no last minute surprises from Italy boss Marcello Lippi as he named his World Cup squad this evening.

The tactician was expected to keep faith with the majority of players he has used over the last year as well as adding in-form Milan striker Pippo Inzaghi.

Roma star Francesco Totti is included despite the fact that he has made just two substitute appearances since breaking his ankle in February.

Livorno ‘keeper Marco Amelia, as he revealed earlier today, has beaten Udinese’s Morgan De Sanctis for the third set of gloves.

Lazio right-back Massimo Oddo has made the party after his fine capital campaign and he also joins Palermo’s Andrea Barzagli after Lippi opted to pick eight and not seven defenders.

There are no places for Sampdoria midfielder Aimo Diana and Monaco striker Christian Vieri who have been ruled out with injury.

Real Madrid sensation Antonio Cassano will have to watch the tournament from home given his lack of Bernabeu use.

Livorno’s Cristiano Lucarelli was also overlooked in favour of Udinese’s goal-shy forward Vincenzo Iaquinta. :nape:

Lippi has also named four reserve players should injuries strike before the start of the tournament with Chievo midfielder Franco Semioli making that shortlist.

Goalkeepers: Buffon (Juventus), Peruzzi (Lazio), Amelia (Livorno)

Defenders: Zambrotta (Juventus), Nesta (Milan), Cannavaro (Juventus), Grosso (Palermo), Zaccardo (Palermo), Barzagli (Palermo), Materazzi (Inter), Oddo (Lazio)

Midfielders: Camoranesi (Juventus), Pirlo (Milan), Gattuso (Milan), De Rossi (Roma), Perrotta (Roma), Barone (Palermo)

Attackers: Totti (Roma), Toni (Fiorentina), Gilardino (Milan), Del Piero (Juventus), Inzaghi (Milan), Iaquinta (Udinese)

Reserves: De Sanctis (Udinese), Bonera (Parma), Marchionni (Parma), Semioli (Chievo)

satisfied. obvious problems with the line-up are iaquinta. unless he is taking a penalty, he is useless. even then, taking penalties, he is still useless. i really wish we had taken a wildcard player.(lucarelli wouldn't be it either).

i don't mind the eight defenders because zambrotta, oddo and grosso can all be converted into wide midfielders with great effect.

great to see perrotta there, but i wish marchionni was in the full 23 and not the reserves.

Yea, that along with Giuly not being called up are my biggest shocks.Because our coach is a Peker(man).

Demichelis isn't going either for Argentina.

Demichelis, Lux and Zanetti out...

I cant believe that Zanetti and Demichelis wont be in Germany...Coloccini, Cufre and Burdisso over Zanetti... :kader:

Apparently Scaloni and Duscher will take those spots...2 red cards for sure in any game...

I hope that this crappy players can do what bad players did in Mexico 86...except Maradona of course...

If Aimar and Cruz dont go to the WC....i dont know what to expect if plan A fails...becouse our plan B is sh*t...

Go Argentina, but f*ck you Pekerman...!!! I miss Bielsa right now...

Well, to answer all of the questions :

The GK's :

Brazilians prefer Rogério Ceni, especially considering Dida's form of late. The thing is, like fellow Kibe Kru said, coaches tend to pick a favorite and they dont change them. Parreira prefers and feels more safe with Dida on goal. Bad for him i guess.

The rightback issue :

Parreira never called Alves before, and he wouldnt do it right now. I pretty much doubt he has watched a single match of the Sevilla rightback anyway. Also, Alves is not well known around here. He's a very strong candidate for 2010 though. Form and class wise, he should be called, but i understand Parreira's reasons. At least he was coherent.

The leftback issue :

Same as Alves. Parreira barely called Leo, and he barely watched him in action for Benfica i guess. It was written all over the place that it was going to be Nery or Gilberto. Another thing Leo has against him, is his age. He's over 30 and he has no future on our NT, even though he's the better player out of the contenders.

Ricardinho :

Class player, when on form. Not the case, but still, Ricardinho in terms of creativity and midfield tempo, takes the edge. Like i said about Baptista, he's decent in a very good amount of positions, but he didnt specialise. He's not better than our DM's at the position, not better than our AM's in their position, and not better than our forwards on the position. Baptista could find himself a place, there, instead of Edmilson, but the latter can also perform as a centre-back.

Ricardinho takes a mean free-kick once in a while, and it's a pain to steal the ball from him, as his markers would say. His main problem is holding too much into it, in intention of making the killer pass. Sometimes he cant manage it and he ends up killing the play. Still, a good midfielder.

Good to see one of the best, if not the best CB in Mexico get a chance to be at the WC. What are the chances of him playing Bruno?

I'm pretty sure he won't be a starter. This is the most probable lineup for the defense:

Nunez----Gamarra----Caceres-----Caniza

If one of our CB get injured or need to go out I'm sure Da Silva is the first option. He can also play in the left side if Nunez doesn't impress or gets injured.

Cardozo (H)!!! So whos gonna start up front?

Santa Cruz and Nelson Haedo Valdez most likely. :)

It's really too bad about Dudek, the 3rd goalie won't even play, I think Dudek deserved to go just because.

Forward line looks awful minus Zurawski, if anything the goals will be coming from midfield.

I haven't seen Poland play in so long, I've never seen half of these players play. I've been following the results though, I'm scared for the World Cup man, it seems like the team is really disorganized... How do you see us doing? I'm not too confident about making it out of the group.

Based only on our performances this year, we should fail completely but I believe we're going to show a different face in the two upcoming friendlies. I like the squad Janas chose. Jelen and Smolarek are skilled forwards. Anyway, this squad looks a bit stronger than the one we had in Korea.
