"Michael Owen has always been a one-trick pony, but what a trick!: Midfielder kicks ball, Michael runs after ball, Michael scores. i.e. England v Argentina.

However, the problem is now that every defender knows his trick and forewarned an increasing number can now match him for pace.

So that's leaves him as a supplier of the ball (see Wayne Rooney). But there are better suppliers of the ball than Owen and better positional players."

From the BBC

Antonio Nunez' agent said that talks have been going on fo a month between the clubs.

The agent of midfielder Nunez has said talks are at an advanced stage following a month of negotiations.

"We are talking to Liverpool," said Jose Antonio Martin Perton. "It's going really well and we hope to have the deal closed in a few hours.

"Even if Owen hadn't happened we were pushing for a move."

looks like he's gone, reports say 8.5 mil plus that midfielder, forgotten his name (H) I should think it'll be a bit more than that :)

8.5M and Nunez, the midfielder. Liverpool got shafted, although Owen must be one of the most overrated English players nowadays. I'd have thought they'd want Morientes to cover?

edit: Realised. Know how Liverpool are very close to signing Xabi Alonso? They'll probably use the money from the Owen deal to buy him... heh. Considering Alonso would be the player Madrid would be going after now since Vieira's not going anywhere.

Looks like Owen for the holding midfield role, eh? Madrid are fucked up a bit if they don't sign someone...

He has played at a club that has lacked the midfield creativity that you would get at United or Arsenal, yet he still managed to score 118 goals in 216 league apps. He is definately one of the top ten strikers in the world.

Top 10? Kidding yourself. I could name 10 forwards better then him on the spot.

Henry
Ronaldo
Raul
Morienties
Vieri
Del Piero
Shevchenko
Adriano
Crespo
Ruud van Nistelrooy

In no particular order.

lol Crespo?, Vieri?, sorry I don't agree with those. And Raul?, why is it Raul can have a bad season yet still be known as one of the best yet when Owen has a dip (With a Sh!tter midfield) he is known as overated and crap...oh English prejudice again most probably:rolleyes:

Same can be said for Crespo, he hasn't done anything for a coupld of seasons yet still has the same level of respect as he always had when he was on top.

Just cos crespo didn't do well in EPL doesn't mean he aint a decent striker, he was pretty awesome for parma, and did well for lazio too. Vieri also used to be class, he's getting old now though.

And Raul is awesome man, yes, i admit that sometimes he can play prettty poor, but some of the things he does are top class (Y) I'd take raul over owen anyday man :)

*shrug* He was pretty shite last season and at Euro, you can't say he doesn't get any assistance in England...

He's lost a considerable amount pace compared to about two years ago, and considering his pace and acceleration is his main asset you could say he's lost it a bit... and he's got an atrocious first touch for a striker. He has zero distribution ability too, and he fits perfectly into Liverpool's playstyle.

I still reckon it's because he was atrociously overplayed when he was still a kid. Rooney very well might turn out like Owen. A good player, but not as good as he could have been.

Team Captain
Del Piero? Nah

It doesn't matter though because Madrid have 3 better strikers than Owen so he will sit on the bench next year.

lol and Henry, Totti, Raul etc were any better?, atleast he got a goal at Euro 2004, a good one at that. He also still managed to score 20+ goals last season even with injuries and a bad midfield.
